"Don't come in here." Kelly stood in the doorway to the kitchen, both hands held up with palms facing out.

"Kel, what have you done?" Her shirt was covered with a pale yellow powder and there was something red and sticky all over her arms. Frowning, he tried to move past her into the kitchen.

"Daddy, you'll ruin the surprise." She grabbed at his hand, transferring some the mess to his skin. It tasted sweet.

"You know the rule about being in the kitchen, Princess." There were too many dangers in the kitchen, between sharp knives and hot flames. Other than getting a snack from the fridge she wasn't aloud in the room alone.

"I didn't use the stove. I microwaved it."

"It?" Not sure if he should be worried, Gibbs moved into the kitchen. There on the counter was the surprise in a glass bowl, surrounded by torn bits of red paper.

"It's a cake," Kelly explained. Pride was clear in her voice.

"It's a beautiful cake." Only years of practice allowed him to keep a straight face while telling the lie. The misshapen yellow ooze with swirls of red on top was as far from cake like as anything he had ever seen.

"It's not done yet. I have to write on it." Kelly's face twisted in concentration. "I can't 'member how to spell birthday though."

"Is it one of your friends birthdays?"

"Daddy!" Kelly huffed loudly as she crossed her arms. It threw Gibbs for a minute- she looked like a miniature Shannon. "The cake's for you."

"My birthday's in September, Kel. Today's November ten..." And then it hit him. November tenth. Marine Corps birthday. Cake and steak. He picked up him daughter, not caring that his almost clear UC sweatshirt was now streaked with red frosting. "I love your surprise."

"That's only one surprise, daddy. I'm not done with the flowers." She pointed at the red paper and safety scissors.

"To go with the cake?" Gibbs guessed.

"To take to the cemetery tomorrow. Last year you were in Kuwait, but me and mommy went. I'm trying to make them like mommy showed me."

"They're perfect, Princess." Red poppies, for veterans day. He and Shannon used to go to the cemetery every year to visit fallen friends. He didn't know they had gone without him last year.

"Will you help me?"

"Sure," he promised.

"But first the cake, okay?"

"Yum."
