Summary: Through his life Tony has had a hero or two.
Tony’s seven years old when he decides he wants to grow up to be Superman. He’s nine when he changes his mind and decides on Batman. Batman has a mask and that’s way better than a pair of glasses. Plus, Batman has the Batmobile and Tony wants that car so bad, his nine year old heart aches for it.
Three years later it’s Thomas Magnum and hot babes and that beautiful red car.
At seventeen he wants to be John McClane and save the day.
Who he wants to be changes a few more times over the years, but Tony joins the police department and finds out he’s really good at being a cop. His methodology and wandering eye make other’s scoff and tell him to grow up, but he likes who he is and it’s working for him.
Then one day he meets a scary, grumpy ex-marine that looks at him like he knows every secret buried in Tony’s head. For the first time, Tony’s goals are not just saving the day, or nailing the brunette that works at his local deli. He doesn’t know what he wants and spends the case waiting for something, anything, from Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
After the case is solved Tony gets another searching look and a casual invite to join Gibbs’ team. Tony puts in his two-week notice that same day.
It’s tough and hard pleasing Gibbs, but Tony discovers that he likes to do it, that he’s good at it. He likes protecting the men and women that help protect the country. Also there’s the secret awe he gets from others that Gibbs doesn’t turn him into a babbling wreck after a few weeks on the job.
Gibbs is demanding and drinks enough coffee to sink a Destroyer, but he’s got a weird sense of humor and appreciates loyalty. After observing Gibbs’ determination and bull-dogged stubbornness, Tony realizes this is the first time he wants to emulate an actual person, and not some movie star’s made up character.
Tony figures he’s still got some growing up to do, but the satisfaction and approval that briefly appear in Gibbs’ eyes tell him that he’s on his way.
