There was a question about NCIS: Origins in relation to the NCIS challenges. Is it acceptable? Is it a crossover? I can see people falling on either side of that discussion. I've thought about it a bit. I mean, yes, as long as Gibbs and/or Franks is a main character in the artwork or story, it is eligible... but is it a crossover?
We have always allowed "pre-series" stories to be eligible.
- So anything regarding Gibbs (or Franks) in Origins is "pre-series" for the original NCIS.
We have always allowed AU stories in the series.
- So whether it's canon or not to the new series, as long as Gibbs or Franks is a main character it would be acceptable.
Due to those thoughts, I will support anyone who wants to feature NCIS: Origins as part of the NCIS challenge (artwork or story), provided that Gibbs (and/or Franks) is a main character. This is because of the rule that a main character needs to appear in at least ten episodes of the original series, which means Gibbs or Franks will need to be a main character for the work to be eligible. (Please note that our Happy Holidays Challenge welcomes artwork and stories from any NCIS series.)
Now, what's the difference between NCIS "pre-series" and NCIS: Origins? Well, one would be the author's version of events and the other would at least somewhat follow the Origins series canon. Our goal is always to include new stories and artwork based on the original series characters. It is somewhat of a unique situation to have the same characters appear as main characters in two different series. However, Origins depicts an earlier version of the characters (Gibbs and Franks) that do appear in the original series.
The bottom line is, yes, provided the work features Gibbs and/or Franks, Origins stories and artwork will be acceptable and will be considered to be within challenge guidelines. Origins is "pre-series" but with its own canon. I will leave it up to the authors and artists if they would like to tag their work as NCIS, NCIS: Origins or both. I will respect their choice.
