The Rise and Fall of WCW was probably the most anticipated WWE DVD set release of the year so far. Nothing made that more evident than the fact that it was near impossible to find on the evening of its release. I was able to locate a copy this past weekend, but only after I had checked three Best Buys and a Target ( Read more... )

Yeah, so, why did WCW fail? In your opinion and in light of that book?

Well, judging by how it was managed in the early days, its a wonder that it lasted as long as it did. WCW didn't make a dime for Turner from when he bought it in the late '80s until around '97. If it wasn't for his personal love of wrestling, I'm sure it would have been sold off or dissolved in the early '90s ( ... )

That's actually really interesting. I always felt that WCW's match style evolved from being a B-grade WWF in the 1980s to being A-grade and even surpassing the WWF during the early-to-mid 1990s. They seemed to have upped the ante and forced McMahon to renovate the boring jobber matches that WWF was previously all about. I remember watching WWF as a kid, and it was basically a big 2-hour commercial for Summer Slam or Wrestlemania, where the big stars manhandled hapless jobbers, then told Mean Jean all about how they were going to likewise manhandle their superstar rival... at Wrestlemania ( ... )

...And on a side note - as poor as WCW was doing at the end, if the AOL/Time Warner buyout hadn't occurred, there's a good chance that it would still be around today.

Of that I have no doubt. Despite how much trouble they were in, there was a niche for them and a fanbase.

Yes. And when it comes down to it, when you trim away all the fat, pro wrestling is probably one of the cheapest forms of television to produce (outside of reality TV). A scaled down WCW without top-dollar "stars" could still have been successful, and would still be one of the most highly viewed programs on TNT. Wrestling is cyclical. Once the good ol' boys are put out to pasture, the young guys finally have a chance to take their spot & flourish. This is the only way we ever end up with break-out stars like Rock, Stone Cold, Goldberg, etc.
