The Rise and Fall of WCW was probably the most anticipated WWE DVD set release of the year so far. Nothing made that more evident than the fact that it was near impossible to find on the evening of its release. I was able to locate a copy this past weekend, but only after I had checked three Best Buys and a Target ( Read more... )

Wrestling was one of those things that always amazed me after I met you. Where I grew up, the low-life trailer-trash with denim jackets with the sleeves cut off watched wrestling. And like-it-or-not, Mike, wrestling does appeal to that sort of person far more than it appeals to us.

Hence, as I watched wrestling between 2000 and 2003, I grew more and more disgusted at the "lowest common denominator" appeals. Opportunities for interesting and dynamic storylines were always abandoned in favor of easy-to-grasp, simplistic resolutions. I cannot count the times when Chuck and I sat at the diner trying to come up with all the possible permutations of the current storylines, only to be disappointed next Raw or Smackdown.

I think you forget, Mike, that wrestling may have a soap-opera dramatic appeal to educated adult males, but in the end you guys only make up 1% of the product's audience. The rest typically wear ripped jeans, hats that read "MACK" or "Peterbilt," love NASCAR, chew tobacco, say "y'all" and make egregious grammatical errors as a matter of course. In other words, Vince McMahon's audience are uneducation white trash, and he has no intention of jeopardizing that audience by making wrestling more than just mindless entertainment and emotional appeals. The plots are like something out of 1984--they have maybe 12 basic storylines that they perpetually recycle. I grew bored with this after the 4 years between rooming with you and hanging out with Chuck and going to graduate school. Call me elitist, but though I understand why you enjoy wrestling, and I myself found it fun for a while, I cannot watch it anymore because I feel like my intelligence is constantly being insulted anymore.
