Sorry for the radio silence this week! No reflection on Bass, just been one of those weeks.
I keep poking the timeline on Rachel, Miles and Bass here. There are two options I can see:
a: Miles held Rachel prisoner until he started to feel bad about it, at which point Bass faked her death (convincingly - a bomb maybe?) and took custody of her. (I know we are meant to feel bad for Rachel - and I do - but I ALSO don't think that holding her captive wasn't...understandable. I doubt any of the governments extant prior to the Blackout would have treated her differently if they had survived the disruption). This clanks for me against Miles openly raw feelings for Rachel - it seems odd he'd have taken up with Nora and been able to convince her he was worth her time, whilst holding his sister in law prisoner in a hall of doors (Fright Night!).
b: Miles held Rachel prisoner for a while, she persuaded him to let her go and he did. She ran around free for a while, then Bass recaptured her and faked her death - possibly not getting openly involved at all. He then held her captive while i: regularly torturing and interrogating her while she survived with dewy skin intact or ii: he held her captive but gave up on getting information out of her and only hauled her out of relatively pleasant cold storage once he suspected they were closing in on Ben.
All we can really agree on for sure is that he has been known to straight-iron her hair for her.
On the other hand, I would argue that there is evidence that Bass is not functioning neurotypically for at least the second half of the show. A friend of mine - who doesn't want to get her work-psychology all over her fandom :D - pointed out that he fits a lot of the criteria for a personality disorder: paranoia, his 'kill him now' mantra, the monomaniacal focus on Miles, inability to concentrate on one plan for any length of time and some others.
If I get a chance later, I'll chase up the notes we exchanged about it.

I really need the show to give me an answer on this timeline. I agree that if Rachel was still Miles' prisoner while he started up with Nora, it's a bit weird and creepy, so he must have thought she was dead already? He was with nora 5 years ago and Rachel became Bass' prisoner (officially?) 4 years ago. So I guess your option of him letting her go and then Bass capturing her and faking her death could work.
All we can really agree on for sure is that he has been known to straight-iron her hair for her.
LOL, maybe that was Jeremy's job. I love her hair all wavy now. Although nobody beats Bass' curls. Whoever was in charge of Rachel's hair care regime... Could they give Miles a haircut, please?
