The writers obviously loved the theory of Riles (and in theory it could work), but they messed up on the delivery. (And made it fluffy)
Where as Bass-Rachel has just always been there...and it's ugly and it's desperate and it's charged and amazing and I miss it.
Actually I think that's the reason the whole Bass-Miles-Rachel OT3-triangle thing never works for me.
Because the problem is either Miles or Rachel.
Having both of them throws the dynamic into crazy-stupid territory where everyone gets hurt or acts OOC (from what we all took to be canon law - ie S1 characterisation).
If it's just Miloe - it's perfect. If it's just Bass and Rachel it's intense and it's broken and hard to look away. But when it's the three of them...I feel an intense need to chuck someone into a river (and usually that person is Rachel, but sometimes it's Miles...).
And that picture makes me wonder what kind of f**kery would go on if Miles and Charlie went missing - presumed dead, but actually trapped somewhere being awesome and Marlie - leaving Bass and Rachel to try and keep everything together. Rachel maybe looking after Connor a little, just for something to do, dialling down the I hate your father to 'ex wife' levels...I'd kind of love to see them spin out together, destroying things in the name of those they've lost - when in reality Charlie and Miles are healing and bonding somewhere, clueless...it'd make a nice S3 opener. Dark!Rachel and Dark!Bass taking over the continent with War and Science. Marlie in jail/detained in California/Road tripping.
Why can't you be writing for this show? That all sounds awesome.
And just to be clear, everyone, I don't *ship* Bass and Rachel. I don't see how they could ever become involved like that. I'm just saying that there's this twisted, intense, charged, crazy chemistry between them. Miles and Rachel might make more sense, but I feel like it's forced because I don't see any chemistry between them, not the romantic kind, anyway.
Glad you enjoyed reading it...it's as close to writing fanfic as I can get these days. LE SIGH.

*giggles* Okay. Okay. We get it XD
And just to be clear, everyone - I don't want Bass and Rachel to actually happen in a physical way on the show. I need Miloe to not break up (for the millionth time). And also, Charlie. Where the hell would that leave Charlie? ...So, only in theory, and maybe (almost always) in fic/graphics, there I can't help but ship it...

I liked it when it seemed like HE wanted it to be a thing and would get all pouty puppy whenever she unleashed on him, or pushed him back a step or ranted about Charlie liking him more - because it was like he was trying to fix their dynamic by making it sexual, something he could understand. And it seemed like she was ready to go along with it because - HELL she's lost everything else, everything she used to define herself with and all that's left is a mess of regrets and death. So why not kiss her brother in law? Why not let him think it means more than it does? ...As long as he's useful. As long as he protects her kid and doesn't get in her way - it's all good...
I think the moment I started sighing (and Cory explains all the whitewashing and Rachel rewriting better than I can) was when suddenly Riles just WAS. There was no question as to whether she could trust him. Whether he could trust her. Whether Charlie would care? There was no discussion. Just bam - Riles. (Jarlie had more lead up than that.)
I'm always going to think back on that moment where Rachel freezes at the mention of Miles' name and turns to give Charlie her full attention uttering - "Did he hurt you?" - the least explained, and most frustrating sentence of the series so far. I can't forget that. As much as I'd like to...coz it'd make life easier.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that Miles hurt Rachel at some point after she turned herself in. There's that scene with Rachel tied to a chair and Miles being all dark and intense and giving off rape-y!vibes, telling her that she shouldn't assume he cares just because of their history, or something of the kind. It's a really disturbing moment. So I think it makes sense that Rachel would be worried about Miles hurting Charlie too somehow.
I get that he hurt her, but we never saw the extent, nor does Rachel seem to hold it against him (the way she does Bass). So we have to assume things. So half the fandom (or whatever) think Miles just tied her to things and talked to her, menaced at her (forgivable stuff)...and the rest of us think worse, but without a way to figure out where his line was (given that she was family and he's not evil).
And then there's no follow up. No discussion.
So it's like it never happened. Like we all dreamed that flashback and should now ignore it and all the hints leading up to it that Miles was a bad guy (or at least - as bad as Bass).
So to me it's unexplained.
And remains so until Miles or Rachel broach the subject with each other...or Charlie about what happened to Rachel after she turned herself in. And why she did it. And what Miles was thinking at the time - that he couldn't bring himself to care enough to stop it.
I sort of think of Rachel now, as Rachel!S2 in my head because of the mismatch of characterisation. Because you're right she should have been worried that Miles would hurt Charlie...but in S2 their only problem is it's really awkward because she used to be married to his brother and he turned her down a million years ago.
