Revolution: Mat Vairo Teases Connor’s Relationship With Monroe and a Big Outbreak

Monroe has finally met his son on Revolution, but nothing about the start of their relationship has gone as he planned. Connor didn’t seem particularly interested in getting to know his real father until the man was kidnapped by his surrogate father (Nunez) and passed on an opportunity to escape in order to remain behind with his son. But when Nunez discovered that Connor attempted to repay the favor and save his father, Nunez confronted him about his treason and now Connor is on the run from the only life he’s ever really known. While he is now determined to take Monroe up on his offer to rebuild his evil empire together, we have to question whether Connor is walking down the right path.

Fortunately, we had an opportunity to discuss Connor and his tenuous familial relationship with Mat Vairo, who gave us some insight into his character and teased what’s coming next.

-

What Kind of a Man Is Connor? While removing Connor from Monroe’s influence as a child spared him growing up under Monroe’s former regime, it did land him in the home of another criminal: Nunez. When asked what kind of a relationship Connor had with his surrogate father and how it affected him, Mat said “There’s a sense of honor and pride within that relationship, but there’s also a sense of ruthlessness.”

Repaying a Debt, But At What Cost? When Connor chose to repay Monroe for remaining behind instead of trying to escape, he sealed his fate. Was it all about being square with his father? Mat doesn’t see it that way. “I think it all happened from the curiosity. The debt wasn’t so important, I think it was his curiosity about a real father’s love that spurned all that on. And [the debt] was just his excuse, really.” But now that Connor has been cast out by Nunez and is left adrift, should we trust that he truly hates his father for disrupting his life, as he claimed? Not necessarily. “I think he says a lot of things in anger. He’s protecting himself, constantly. I think that [Connor's statement that he regrets helping Monroe] should be taken with a grain of salt. I think he would have regretted more not exploring some sort of real fatherly relationship.”

Why Choose This Path? When asked if he believes Connor’s decision to rebuild Monroe’s empire with his father was because of revenge, power or a desire to get to know Monroe, Mat said “I honestly think it’s all three. But I think, ultimately, underneath it all, even though he doesn’t know it, it’s that same concept of being loved and not being alone. I think all of those things represent a sense of community and a sense of not being burned again. He’s been burned so many times. He’s been left alone so many times. I think he’s determined for that not to happen again. And this is kind of the way that he can solidify that.”

Father-Son Dynamic. Given the type of man Monroe is capable of being, we have to wonder how he really feels about his son and whether Connor believes there can be a true and loving relationship between them. “I think [Connor’s] spidey senses are tingling. I think he’s definitely trying to feel out how much he can trust him. If he’s going to be using him as a means to an end or not because Connor has big trust issues, like I said, so he’s definitely on high alert at this point. But I think he wants to trust him. The next step really is feeling out that relationship and what all of this is going to mean for him. He all of a sudden went from having everything, in his mind, to having nothing but his dad and his dad’s word. That dynamic is going to get explored quite a lot.”

The Extended “Family”. While Connor hasn’t had an opportunity to really interact with Rachel or Miles yet, that dynamic will be explored quite soon. “There’s going to be that group dynamic coming into [tonight's] episode. There’s definitely tension all throughout the ranks, from Miles and Monroe to Rachel and Monroe to Connor and all of them, essentially. I think it’s a pretty interesting group dynamic that will come out from that tension. I think Miles [in particular] is a representation of trauma for Connor. I think one of the most traumatic experiences for him was being pulled away from his mom like that. And Miles is sort of a representation of that. That definitely exists between them, in my opinion.”

But will Connor have a chance to meet Charlie? Not in tonight’s episode, although that will be happening soon enough. With Mat appearing in several upcoming episodes, we will see him interact with more characters. Regarding Charlie, in particular, “Connor’s wary of everyone, but I definitely think that he finds her attractive. She’s intriguing to him so that may carry them somewhere, [or] that may not.”

What’s Next? Finally, when we asked Mat to tease any big stories that are coming up, he warned us that “All I can say is there’s a really tense outbreak story that comes out.” It sounds like Connor and his father will soon join Charlie, Gene, Rachel and Miles in the next big Patriot-related crisis.
