In my head canon, Ben, Rachel and the kids are at the airport to greet Miles and Bass' parents and younger sisters are there to greet him. The reunions couldn't be more different.
Miles is greeted perfunctorily with awkward hugs, claps on the back and stiff, unnatural smiles, Charlie peeking shyly at her unfamiliar uncle from Ben's arms; Miles doing that "pat the child on the head" thing adults do when they have no idea how to interact with a child.
Bass, on the other hand, is greeted enthusiastically and lovingly, first by his mother, but only because his father has held back the eager little sisters with a gentle "Give them a moment," as mother and son melt with happy sobs in each others arms. The little sisters are next, Bass hugging and teasing both that they've grown too much and are too pretty and he's going to have to go all protective big brother on them while he's home. And the older of the two casts a longing glance at Miles that Bass pretends he doesn't see, but makes a mental note of to tease Miles with the news that his sister has a crush on Miles' sorry ass. And then the reunion with his father, a full on body crushing hug and a simple, "Welcome home, Bass."

I could have SWORN I've read all your fics and I can't recall which fic had this Cynthia crushing on Miles theme. Oh, unless maybe it was one I skipped over the summer to avoid spoilers and I missed reading it? Please provide link!!!
Dark is Right (written early last May) was the first I believe, but my other stories have also mentioned it in passing since it's my head canon. In DiR, the present storyline is about the boys going on a diplomatic mission (with bombs of course - their idea of diplomacy) to steamroll Kelly Foster using Alec's help, while the past is the boys on their first tour in Iraq, adjusting to being Marines, plus flashbacks to when Miles was a teenager. It's about daddy issues - Miles with his dad, Miles as Alec's faux dad. I don't know if you'd tolerate it well (I think this is why you skipped it), because in the present Miles is with Nora, and in the past, Miles and Bass are trying to get over Emma. Those are more minor themes, but they are certainly present (Miles has his hand down his pants about Emma, which makes it more tolerable for me!). It's one of the more uneven stories I ever wrote: I started it and then abandoned it and finished it in an ill-advised flurry so it wouldn't be an FF orphan; hence, a very abrupt ending. It's one of my uglier, slightly deformed children but contains some writing and ideas I'm genuinely proud of. *shrug*

But, the show will never give us that scene.
