Hi everybody! Remember me? Sorry to be gone all summer. Work schedule sucked. But I return to help with the prompt-a-thon.

The End | Sebastian Monroe | Everything Ends | T | No Warnings | Angst
Bass's thoughts after giving Neville his assignment in Enemies of the State part 1

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end

You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails

The End

President Monroe sits at his desk, hands shoulder width apart and gripping the edge of the mahogany panel so firmly that his knuckles are white and his fingers are becoming numb. His breaths are measured and deep. In. Out. In. Out. He has to mentally will himself to keep drawing in air, the mantra reminding his lungs of their normally autonomic task. Nothing works right at the moment, and he doubts that it ever will again.

He has just sent Tom Neville away with instructions he can’t even comprehend having needed to give. Hunt down Miles Matheson. Miles. Miles his best friend. Miles, the one he created this entire government with. Miles, that just tried to kill him in his sleep.

Monroe pleads with his mind to wake up, because this has to be a dream. There is no way that what he thinks he has just lived through actually happened. He will wake up and Miles will bet asleep in his own room down the hall. None of this will have happened. Because it can’t have happened.

And yet, his consciousness does not slip. The corners of the desk edge digging painfully into his palms force him to face the harsh reality of it all. A physical pain tears through him as his mind tries to assimilate the events of the last hour with the previous four decades of memories. His psyche cannot settle on a single emotion, and he snaps through rage, disbelief, pain, sorrow, paranoia, fear, and grief as if a bored teenager were flipping through television channels, unable to settle on one feeling long enough to let anything take root.

He briefly hopes that his friend will walk through that door any moment now with an explanation and an apology. That everything can go back to the way it was. A dark voice in the back of his mind dispels that hope. There is no reason that Miles could ever give for his actions that will justify them. Things will never go back to the way they were.

He tries to remind himself that he still has his empire. This republic that bears his name and their mark will go on. Beyond Miles’s absence, nothing will change. The dark voice won’t let him pretend that he can believe that.

He can no longer stand to look at the desk in front of him, haphazardly organized, with paperwork still bearing his traitorous brother’s signature glaring up at him. He releases his grip on the desk and uses a forearm to violently wipe everything from the desk top. Paperwork, pens, and a crystal decanter go flying. The crystal hits the wall, shattering into a thousand pieces. Bass stares into the prisms of light created by the firelight flickering against the shards. There is no saving it. Any of it. He feels everything spiraling and crashing in on him. He recognizes the moment for what it is. The beginning of the end. The end of everything.
