So apparently the NaNo guys are now doing
Camp NaNoWriMo, which is NaNo but in July or August (depending on which month you commit to -- or both, I'm sure). This is kind of awesome, as I don't work near as much now as I did back in November. Oh god no. (Have I ever told you guys how awesome work is, now that the jerkbag, pathetic excuse of a general manager is gone? BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME. :D)
So today, on the fly, I was like "I'M GONNA WRITE FOR THIS CAMP NANO BECAUSE YAAAAY WRITING!" I have some backstory I'd love to actually write. I say this about pretty much every NaNo since #3 (which still sucks and hasn't been finished yet -- and doesn't have the excuse of #2 in that it's a HUGE FUCKING PROJECT OMG).
I find that NaNo is a great time to actually get writing done. You see, I write during the year, but how much, it's hard to gauge. It depends on a lot of things: how much I work, if I want to do other things, if I'm motivated to write that certain story. I tend to find that these days, I write most during break in a notebook, which I then transfer into the proper writing files on my computer. Some weeks, I don't write anything (but might read back a lot); some weeks, I have more spare time off the clock and I get several chapters written.
November, though, that's when the real stuff gets done. Admittedly due to the nature of NaNo (that technically it's supposed to be a new novel and not something you've already started) it means I have more unfinished projects, but it's still nice to have something new to look at when I get bored. It's the atmosphere that gets me. Being able to update a shiny wordcount bar! In theory, networking with other people doing the same thing! (In theory -- I don't visit the NaNo forums.) Throwing down
cheeky_duckie in the NANODOME! It gets me motivated to write the 50,000+ I've done every November since 2007. I don't have that same kind of motivation the rest of the year, because after November, I go back into writing in complete and utter isolation. Let me tell you, considering that I'm the only person I'm writing for, it's a miracle anything ever gets written. :p
So, I think this month is a good month to start a new project. It'll get me warmed up for November, anyway. I have a new computer (a laptop!) and new word processing software (OpenOffice). I haven't done too much heavy writing with it so far, so it'll be a good opportunity to see how it really holds up to the longer sessions.
In a few days, assuming I can actually get the ball rolling on this (I am so procrastinating right now), I'll start updating LJ about my writing progress. It's all it's good for anymore. :D
Aaaand this is 517 words I could've had written for my Camp NaNo projects. PROCRASTINATION IS AWESOME!
