I decided to not fail at life today and go see Gabi. We watched anime and I has thoughts!
STAR DRIVER: TAKUTO OF THE RADIANCE
Wow. Just wow. I will admit the first thing I thought when I started this episode was that Sugata (FUKUJUN) is the spitting image of Alto. Then Takuto showed up and he's the spitting image of Daisuke from DNAngel with the personality of Daisuke from Digimon 02. This of course made me then decide Sugata was actually an older Ken. Then my brain started tuning things out in attempt to figure out the weird love triangle between the two and Wako, wherein I also pondered over why Sugata spent so much time staring at Takuto. I also figured out fairly quick that Takuto was Miyano, especially when he did his "Piiiiinch" thing. More tuning out and boggling at the Wolf's Rain-esque outfits and appearances of the Glittering Crux Brigade until the FABULOUS PRETTY BOY TRANSFORMATION. By the way, Takuto must be the straightest man alive if he can go around referring to himself as the Galactic Pretty Boy with no shame. Immediate references that were caught: Geass/Gurren Lagan in the EPIC, RahXephon and Eureka 7 in the mecha, Cowboy Bebop in the character design, Macross in the singing, Utena/Geass in the Drama Club and of course Sailormoon in the transformations. By the way, I did not know the director of Sailormoon is actually directing this. More wow. By the second episode, Gabi was convinced Sugata wants Takuto's ass, a sentiment shared by the Emo Pretty Boy Villain (Head?) voiced by Ishida Akira. I do enjoy his creepy relationship with Maaya Sakamoto fish girl. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Star Driver beyond it being REALLY HILARIOUS and amusing to watch Takuto transform and dance around with his mecha. I love the bright DNAngel-styled colors, the EPIC music (I swore one piece was the Back to the Future theme), the potential trio of Takuto/Sugata/Wako, the fluffy vice president and creepy Drama Club, the high-quality cast and the overall creativity that went into both mech design and over-the-top villain design. But seriously, if all the bad guys are in school with Takuto and they know he's the Galactic Pretty Boy, why don't they just STAB HIM IN THE FACE? I mean, Kallen knew how to handle this sort of situation. Solazy.
Character-wise and plot-wise, Star Drive has little to offer. I don't mind since it's pretty much Sailormoon and Sailormoon took a while to develop. Gabi is also convinced Sugata will unleash his own magical transformation to save Takuto, while also being convinced Sugata is going to end up on the opposite side of Takuto in the future. Without fremenies, Star Driver would not complete its bingo card of mecha show stereotypes, and it's clear it's shooting for THEM ALL. Also, the poster for the series kind of indicates that Sugata has some connection to the Emo Pretty Boy Villain. But it's enjoyable and entertaining, and I actually love the Sailormoon feel. I have faith it might go somewhere, but who knows? I am definitely looking forward to more of it. And I really want an icon of the Galactic Pretty Boy's transformation.
LEGEND OF THE LEGENDARY HEROES
I stopped watching this for a bit because I mostly watch it when I visit Gabi, and I haven't done that in a while or we've been busy. I decided to watch Episode 15 before I watched the backlog because I wanted to know whether the story actually went anywhere. I was happy to see Ryner is finally back with Sion, Milan might actually be doing something actively villainous and the new OP is very prettiful. I also liked the awesome scene between Ryner and Sion, where Ryner ends up topping Sion in bed. Reasons for enjoyment should be obvious. In the backlog, we ended up liking some nice scenes where Claug saved Milan because Sion asked him, where Milan killed his pedo dad, where Ryner adopted a chibi with Alpha Sigma and where the boring love interest found some guy with a very inconvenient sword. I keep hoping LoL will develop a plot beyond the hideously boring political one of Sion or the relic-searching of Ryner and Ferris because I think the characters can actually be quite interesting when dealing with Ryner's plot.
In general, I think Ryner is the best character. He's not as derivative as Ferris or Sion and you really get a sense of who he is. You feel his pain of being an Alpha Sigma bearer, but you also get his philosophical side in which he questions why people kill and truly yearns for peace. But you also get his ditzy, topped-by-Ferris side. Ryner is also possible a much better person than Sion, despite being possessed by ZeroAlpha Sigma because while Sion works to secure a peaceful world, he's not above using dark methods to achieve it. Whereas Ryner will save enemies, avoid death blows and generally try to resolve things as civilly as possible. I love when Ryner talks to the chibi Sigma user about his Eyes and how he hates himself and wonders if he should die but he has people who want him to live. I also love Ryner's struggle with the demon inside him. Whenever the story is focusing on him and Alpha Sigma, it is infinitely more interesting. Most of the time, I tune Sion's politics out, especially with the super-dull Estabul. But I think in a better written series, Ryner would be more than a good character; he would be amazing. He's like a demonic jesus, and that's hilarious. I mostly hold out the tiniest bit of hope in LoL because of Ryner. And yes, it does help that he is also voiced by FukuJun.
Also, in regards to "Name of the Wind," dang is little Kvothe a Mary Sue.
