This book is a splendid mix of vampires, sorcery, and alternate history, set at the beginning of the 20th century, mostly in the English colony of New Amsterdam. I'm guessing you've already checked out the Anita Blake, Vampire hunter books by Laurel K. Hamilton, and the Dresden Files stuff by Jim Butcher?

Alternate earths w/ nasty boogums, with detectives that have their own codes. 8)

It's been a few years since I read any Anita Blake stuff, but at the time, for some reason, I couldn't get into it; I should probably give it another chance. I have the first of the Dresden Files books on my shelf (I know, I'm running late), and I hope to get to it this year since I'm not distracting myself with shiny new fiction purchases.

New Amsterdam was great stuff, yes.

I liked the first half-dozen-or-so Anita Blake books -- the tension and attitude and Blake's character arc towards becoming one one of the monsters -- but gave up on the series at Blue Moon.
