Dear College Alumnae Association:
Thank you so much for inviting me to my 15 year college reunion. In addition to making me feel old, you have also reminded me that I am also poor and don't run my own life.
It was so nice to get the brochure with registration and pricing materials on April 1st. It was less nice to get it on April 1st when the reunion is on May 22.
While I know many of my alumnae sisters are business owners, trust fund babies, philanthropists, or are the bosses of their own lives, I am not. Like many working stiffs, a weekend away cannot be planned on 6.5 weeks notice. While I am fortunate enough to not have to put in months ahead of time for a vacation day or two, I would have to get plane tickets by, um, tomorrow, in order to hopefully find some sort of deal as I am no longer in a position to spend 28 hours roundtrip on a Greyhound bus for a 3 day weekend. Additionally, due to unexpected expenses in February and March of the dental variety, my savings are currently depleted. In order for me to have been able to budget for this trip, I would have had to have been given pricing and dates sometime in January so I could adequately save sufficient funds to fly to College Town, stay on campus and actually eat overpriced food with my former classmates while I am subjected to photos of their weddings and children on their smartphones.
Please bear in mind that while we all got an excellent education, not all of us reaped the monetary awards, much less have the freedom to run off for a weekend on a whim. (Some of us have money, but have other obligations like spouses and kids, who would have thunk it?)
So in closing, Dear Alumnae Association, while I was so hoping I could have joined you and my classmates at the 15 year reunion, as I had to miss the 10 year due to a stint of unemployment, I will have to miss this one too. I can only hope that in 5 years you will have gotten your act together and maybe sent the registration info before April next time.
