Spent last night playing happy homemaker. We moved the vast majority of my stuff, (we being me, MS, CW, Dr. F and M's son D). Managed to get most of it there but will have to go back next week for at least one more truck load. Somehow, despite moving into a larger apartment with no furniture, the place filled up before the old one was emptied. Never was I so glad that I still have the place until the end of the month. Especially since there is so much dirt and dust that I still have to go clean.
So how did I spend my fine Saturday night after the movers were fed and I was left alone in an apartment full of boxes? Did I put the computer back together? Did I set up the phone line? Did I cook an elaborate meal? No, because (a) I got stuck and I can't figure out which cord is which, (b) because it was after 5 and (c) somehow the box with the plates, silver ware and pots was not the box that made the last trip, instead it was the box with a humongous mixing bowl and some decorative glasses. Um, that's not helpful. Try fixing breakfast with no milk and plastic forks and plastic cups. It was interesting to say the least.
So what did I do? What was the first thing that HAD to be done? I lined the cabinets . . . until 2 in the morning. Bright cherries in the kitchen and a blue and white in the bathroom. I even lined the medicine cabinet despite the fact that the shelves in there are only 3.5 x 22 inches (and I know because I measured them.) If I ever go off the deep end, I'm sure that's a symptom of something.
So now the apartment is in this state of limbo that makes it actually less liveable than the last one. There is nothing to sit on and no place to put anything to sit on. There is no phone or functioning computer. Everything is covered in the parking lot dust from the old place. The tv is in boxes and there is no room to figure out where to put it much less set it up. There are empty bookshelves everywhere and books in boxes. I can't figure out how to light the stove pilot that of course blew out again because even if the new stove is modern, God forbid home economics engineers would have figured out how to design a stove that can keep it's pilot lit, even if you open a window. (Needless to say the window is still open.) Also, one of the kitchen cabinets is 'swinging' from it's connection to the wall (only discovered after I lined the other two), so I'm going to have to call and have that fixed and I still can't put away the dishes whenever they do arrive in case they have to rip the cabinets out.
In other news, Ikea (the orchid) is listing to one side, but the leaves have grown more turgid (not limp). I'm taking this as a good sign, even though the flowers are now wilting. If the leaves are getting harder this means they are probably getting water again and there is hope the plant won't die.
And now a question for the computer literate among you. In my own defense, I didn't take apart my computer, CW did, so I wasn't able to keep the cords attached the way I normally do. I have a power cord that could either fit in the monitor or the harddrive. (Thus I assume I also have another cord like this somewhere in the new apartment). The question is, does it matter which one I use for which or are they in fact interchangable? I'd rather not blow out my harddrive, despite MS's and CW's assertion that my computer was 'crap' and I should 'go buy a laptop so we don't have to move this big heavy thing' (said in a good natured tone). I just paid an extra month's rent, spent $300 on a bed and I have nothing to sit on. No, I'm not buying a new computer when the old one works just fine (assuming it's plugged in properly).
If anyone needs to get in touch with me, email is best (I can check at work) or call there. If it's not urgent, you can call the old number for the next few days and the machine will pick up and I should get the message eventually.
Also, the yuppie candle has gone missing. I came into the new place on Friday and it was gone, along with the tiny African violet and the basil growing kit, but not the chives or parsley. I also had new windows. I suspect (since I found a bit of mulch in the sink and a small piece of glass on the floor) that the workmen knocked the three off the countertop by accident (since they were all on the counter together) and then just cleaned it up and didn't say anything. I'm more pissed that there wasn't a note or anything than I am about the missing items because I don't actually know that they weren't stolen and I could have found that piece of glass with my bare foot. No matter how well you clean up broken glass there is always a piece you find later. And besides, that candle was an overpriced splurge that I normally don't buy for myself. It was the first nice 'thing' for the apartment. I'm pissed off that they probably broke it and then just hoped I wouldn't notice. I can replace it but an 'oops, sorry, we broke it by accident and didn't just steal it' would have been nice. I hadn't even had a chance to light it yet.
In any case, since I have to call the rental place about the incredibly swinging cabinet, I'll mention it to them, just in case the items were taken, and it wouldn't be fair to other residents if there are in fact thefts occurring. In other news, the new windows are nice. Well, I've got cells to feed and plate out so hope all is well with everyone else and don't get worried if I'm on less often. It just means I'm still trying to figure out the cords.
