(PICSPAM) 5 Perfect Scenes In Mad Men S1

Carol & Joan

Just think of me as a boy.

This scene (and the one with Salvatore and the client at dinner) are so heartbreaking. Carol expressing her love and devotion to Joan and it ends without it even being acknowledged. Homosexuality was a big no-no back then (it was still considered a mental illness during this time). Salvatore didn't even attempt to try anything with the client because of the consequences.

Adam & Don

Where do I go?

By this time (5th episode), it's already established Don isn't really Don, but the introduction of Adam is a physical representation of that. Don running, avoiding, actively, purposely from his past. I remember when I first saw this episode, I thought Don was going to kill him. That was how palpable Don's (and Jon Hamm) need to escape his past was. But Don telling Adam to forget him by giving him money to go away? That was worse. That was worse than simply telling Adam. The money is such a desperate manifestation of how much Don hated who he was. And Adam's reaction? Fuck. It's like... yeah, it would've hurt less if you shot him.

Don & Helen

H - Interesting crowd in there
D - Same crowd out here

First, I find it fascinating Don doesn't even look at Helen that way once in the entire episode, and he doesn't look at her at all in this scene. And this scene is so great and powerful and simple, and it just works. Helen, divorced, single mother, is being eaten alive by the pack of she-wolf housewives, Betty included... and it's like being around kids. Betty being childish was basically her entire storyline the first season, and her and Francine's treatment of Helen is just one of the many ways it was presented. Helen is treated with no respect, masked in kindness. Don is alone, drinking himself to oblivion, watching kids play and be themselves. With this little exchange it explains almost everything what people like Don and Helen (alike in that they're completely alone) deal with: children.

Pete

After selling his own copy to a client after the client rejected Don's, Pete is fired. I'm going to be honest and say I hate Pete. I really do. He's arrogant in that terrible way he doesn't know he is, condescending to his wife, infantile, and over all very fucked up. Don't get me wrong, I love to hate the guy, and there wouldn't be a Mad Men without him, but sometimes I want to chew his head off and feed it to something. This scene basically bottled down Pete to the scared little shit he is. His life is his job, and he's good at it, and he's lost it. It's all there in his face, such despair and hopelessness. I noticed how the frames included a picture of Trudy. I'm pretty sure this was intentional. Watching this scene all I could think was: what the fuck is gonna do? With no money? What about Trudy? He doesn't know how to do anything else, and he knows he's an asshole. His family's not going to help him. He's really fucked. And I actually felt sorry for him.

Joan & Roger

Not one word is said in this scene, and that pretty much sums up everything. No one talks about the real things. The infedelities, the lies, the truth. It's all behind closed doors and although no one talks about it, everyone knows. Fuck, I bet the doorman who let them out knows. At the end of the day women like Joan and men like Roger end up on opposite ends of the street.
