I was accused of being racist tonight.

Work was extremely busy and we were grossly understaffed in both the kitchen and on the floor.  So of course, all hell broke loose.  People were waiting 45+ minutes for their food, and were, understandably, becoming a little irritated.  On top of that, the cooks were not handling the situation well, and the food was randomly coming out, not in any particular order.  So I figured the best thing to do would to just serve the food as it comes out, in no particular order, and then apologize profusely to the customers for the restaurant’s lack of organization.

Boy, this pissed one lady off.

She was with her husband (who happened to be black-- this detail turns out to be veeeery important in the end) They order their food, and then 5 minutes later the table next to them ordered theirs.  And, as luck would have it, of course, the “table next to them” got their food first.  You can see where this is going…  So, according to the lady, I, the evil racist, am not bringing them their food because I obviously have something against her African American husband.  I, therefore, am a horrible person and should be fired.  The husband, BTW, was extremely friendly and polite the entire time.

I’m still trying to figure this one out myself.  My feelings are hurt, and I just hope that lady realizes that calling someone a racist is a serious accusation, not a weapon you pull out when you’re not getting your way in some frivolous situation.

Incidents like these make me want to quit my job and get one that requires no interaction with people.
