Yes, bring all of your books. You will need them in class and in order to write your papers. My instructor (Emma Plaskitt is fantastic if she's your instructor) had us write 2 papers, each was about 5-6 pages. We also had the option to write one 10-12 page paper at the end if we wanted to go that route. And also yes to the classes being very similar. It's heavily discussion based.
I would use the ATMs to get money, because that way you don't have to pay a fee somewhere to actually exchange US dollars for British pounds. Because of the exchange rate, you'll spend a lot of money quickly. Thinks there cost about the same as they do here(except for every pound, you're spending $2). The only thing that can sometimes be cheaper are pints of beer. I'd honestly bring as much as you can spare. I set aside $1000 for the trip, was very thrifty and didn't travel much outside the planned trips, but ran out of money the last week there. I would bring atleast $1500 if you can so that you can see everything you want to.
I did leave my job at the bank. I now work in Plymouth at a place called Pre-Press and we publish text books. I really like what I do, so it's a total change from working at the bank and hating it. What are your summer plans, other than Oxford?
