Mini-Log: Hearing things.

Karl sat up and looked around the room, searching for the source of the noise that had awoken him. The room was dark, only a soft glow from the fireplace offering any illumination. There was nobody else about, nobody stirring who could have spoken. Nobody awake. He peered about, checking to see if Max had returned. The still lump was all the answer he needed and listening, he could just make out the sound of his friend's snoring.

It had to have been nothing. Perhaps it was a dream. Karl had dreamt about a lot of women over the years, This was probably no different. His head hit the pillow and darkness started to descend as he settled into the warmth of his bunk.  Sleep wouldn't be too far away.

About thirty minutes later Karl was sitting up again, anxious and scanning the room for any movement. Anything to reveal where the culprit was hiding. There was nothing. There was no voice and certainly no woman within the room, not this room. Karl wondered again if his mind was playing tricks on him. Wait, there. Movement in Max's bunk, he focused on that and waited.

Max stirred, sitting up like Karl had done seconds before him. The two men exchanged a glance and Max broke the silence, "Did you hear that?" Karl nodded and cursed.

"It's her, isn't it? It was her doing it. Like in the park." Max was not happy. They'd already been told they would receive extra payment but they were nowhere near her now. How could she be chasing them? She had been scared and now she was scaring them? "Shut up!"

Karl watched as his friend yelled at her but knew it would do no good. She was nowhere near them. Somehow her words could reach them but theirs wouldn't come close to her. His features twisted in upon themselves, fueled by anger and arrogance. She would pay for this. She might be enjoying this little game she was playing upon them but she couldn't keep it up forever. It was just a question of when before the three of them met up again. The damned bonus had better be worth it, Karl thought. If it wasn't, he just might forget that he had been forbidden from causing her harm.

Tomorrow was another day and maybe, she'd let him sleep the rest of this night through.
