NCU2: A Mother's Love Is Tested

Oct 12, 2005 03:50

This story is the beginning of something for the current NCU board. It was reinstated by some of the old players. I'm fleshing this out a bit to get something on the road.

Collie shook her head as she looked through the financial records for the university. Except for a few extra expenditures for the library, everything was on track and in order. She muttered under her breath. "Whate'er 'e's up to, it's not comin' out o' school funds."

Her office looked out onto the gardens, they had been replanted after the school was destroyed in the last battle with demons. It was also the site of Judas's tombstone. The monument had been carved by Braven Goldflame and by some miracle had survived the holocaust. As she gazed out the window, she wondered aloud to herself. "What mistake was made ta change 'im from the child I'm raisin' inta a... " She quieted as voices of students carried through the hallways.

"Is it true?"

"Yeah, I tell you, I saw her go in there. "

"Seriously, what would she want here?"

"I heard she's the headmaster's mother, but it could be just a rumor."

At those words, Collie opened her office door and walked into the hall. She offered a smile to the giggling young women, who suddenly looked like they were gazing at a ghost. The soft click of boot heels took her down the stairs, it was only two flights. The irony of it was that the third floor office used to be where she shared a home with Judas and their children. The main building was much larger now.

There was something on the wind that she couldn't put her finger on. As she knelt by the monument to pull weeds from the stone she considered a great many things, one of them being the changes in her life since Judas had passed on.

Various presences were making themselves known to her as her mind opened. Caiti was doing one of her favorite things, playing with Jacen. Ani was apparently planning the school activities calendar. Mara, hopefully, was studying for her classes and taking a break from her singing career.

And then, there was Draven. Something about the vibration from him caused Colleen to shiver. Ever since Dennis and Rhiannon's wedding, she had a feeling that Draven was up to something. Whatever it was, if he'd been strong enough and skilled enough to bring Judas's spirit to visit, who else could he call?  Judas was not malevolent, she didn't worry when he was called to see Rhi on one of the happiest days of her life. However, the ancient sidhe knew full well that if Draven succeeded at that, he would continue and likely call up something not as nearly as pleasant as the visage of his departed father.

A little breeze blew her hair out of her eyes as her fingertips traced the lettering on the stone. "There 'as ta be a way ta fix this. A way ta get further inta 'is 'ead."
