hereNicole reached the lake just as the sun was rising. Her head lifted as she watched the horses rush along the valley floor. The lake was at the base of one of the mountains that cradled Navarra within them. As she watched the beasts that ran free on her mother’s land, she was entranced by their power and beauty. It was then that Nicole wanted to distance herself from the sea. The frustration and hurt over Anorlas and the pearls had made her wish to forget the gift of Poseidon. Poseidon was one of her father’s kin. Through her life, the gods of Olympus had each in turn bestowed a gift on her and her twin, Garrick. The first of those gifts for Nicole was learning to tame fire. Rhi’s destiny was mapped for her, when she was old enough; her father gave all he had to his youngest born.
Watching the herd thunder across the ground and splash through the water reminded Nikki that it was not only her father’s kin that had bestowed gifts on her. She removed the combs that had been holding her hair atop her head. Deep auburn waves fell to her waist. As she swayed her head from side to side, her tresses shimmered with the rays of the morning light. The tide from the lake gently brushed against her feet. Normally, it was soothing sensation, but on this day, it brought tears to her eyes. It pained her deeply to think a gift of the lake, her miniature sea, was refused and a price was placed upon it.
Nicole stepped back from the water. In the water near where the young woman had been standing was the reflection of a magnificent creature. This was the legend that Anorlas said he had never met. Crystalline streams flowed freely down her cheeks and fell to the earth. Save one, they formed perfectly matched hard crystal teardrop shapes. She would collect them later, but now it was time to honor the fey and the rest of her mother’s kin.
Hooves pawed the ground, the beauty reared up, tossing her thick red mane she called out through the valley with a neigh and nickering sound. The call was answered and echoed by herd after herd of horses and unicorns. As she bucked and splashed in the water, she finally understood that true happiness begins with the self.
When the days ended, she knew she would have to face Anorlas. Despite the love she knew was growing within her heart, Nicole wondered if it would be best to mask those emotions from even herself and preserve a friendship. She would present him with what, perhaps, would be her last gift to him, the precious tears of a fey.
