As he watches the boat row away, unexpectedly - it's probably Groves' influence - Gillette feels a little sorry for Lord Edrington. The man's accustomed to command - to being in the thick of things - yet here he's relegated to the status of passenger, and told only those scraps of information the busy can afford to throw him. His officious interference earlier was probably nothing more than an attempt to help.
"My Lord," he says, wondering why he's setting himself up to be trampled on again. Definitely Groves' influence. "My apology earlier was somewhat forced. My particular friend is..." He's not going to use the word dying, though it would be appropriate enough. "Afflicted with the same illness which laid low the plague ship. I was a little distraught, but I behaved like a scrub to you, and I'm sorry."
