Why do all the best toys come with £3 million price tags? I couldn't afford Canonteign (Pellew's estate, which he actually bought for Pownoll) when it was up for sale and I can't afford the Grand Turk. Grumble.
Hi, I've just joined your community, pellegrinations, and thought I'd take a look at your own LJ. It's full of stuff I'm interested in reading so I would love to add you to my flist if that's okay?
I'm so glad to hear it because I think I'm smitten. I watched the Examination thinking I would be thrilled with Denis Lawson as he's a favourite of mine. And he *was* good but Robert Lindsay was even better and I couldn't take my eyes off him every time he was on screen. I assume he isn't in the whole series though?
He's in all of them :) The first four are the best, partly because Pellew wasn't in the books the last four are based on, so they had to find a role for him. But I was smitten (with him, and with HH/EP) pretty well from the moment he announced "My name is Captain Sir Edward Pellew"!
Oh excellent... I thought perhaps as Hornblower got promoted and maybe moved ship, Pellew would disappear. Someone on my flist suggested I'll be bowled over by Bush when I see him but I doubt it. Much prefer older me. ;-)
I bought the first book in a secondhand bookshop yesterday, funnily enough. I know that the books are *very* different to the series but I want to read them anyway as I quite like historical seafaring books. (Just finished Redburn by Herman Melville which is excellent but a bit grim.)
Technically Pellew should have disappeared but some wise soul decided to keep him!
As for Bush, I like him and I like Hornblower/Bush, especially in the books, but nothing could sway me from Hornblower/Pellew!

Do you mean Midshipman Hornblower? Some of the plots are recognisable but then again that book is quite different to the others because it's a collection of short stories and not as good as the novels, I don't think. A lot of people say it's better to start with the one Forester wrote first ("The Happy Return") but I started with "Flying Colours" and went from there, which hooked me rather effectively :)
Must search out more HH icons.
There are heaps around... not enough Pellew, in my opinion, but there are some here.
Oh, it is the first book, all I meant to say really is that there's better to come!
Thanks for the review link, I'll check it out - perhaps tomorrow, as I just realised it's nearly 2 am! (oops)
And I'm glad you liked the vid :) See what "The Examination for Lieutenant" did to me... or, should I say, what I did to "The Examination for Lieutenant"!

That's the one. I understood it to be the first but maybe I should have asked someone first. ;-) No matter, I shall get them all in the end.
Someone on my flist went to see Robert recently in The Entertainer. Thought you might be interested in her review here:

I forgot to check whether it's friends locked, hopefully not.
And I just downloaded your songvid - it's wonderful!!
