Arnold was an ordinary man but he lived in his own world. He liked to think of himself as a man of action and most people agreed with him. It would have been nice if he actually did things and didn't just talk about it but the truth was that he didn't do much talking either.
Amy was not an attractive woman nor was she very smart but she got through life anyhow. Some people would tell you that she bullied her way through life or intimidated people but that's because they think that only beautiful women can get what they want. Amy was just persistent. Not so persistent that she was annoying. Just effective.
Arnold and Amy met by accident. Arnold was siting on the bus trying to figure out the manual for his VCR when suddenly the bus took a sharp turn and knocked Amy off balance and into Arnold's lap.
"What the fuck" Arnold said "Goddamn driver's gotta learn how to fucking drive"
"And you gotta figure out how to zip up your pants. Put that thing away" replied Amy, standing now and brushing off her jacket.
Arnold zipped up his pants and took a good look at what had just taken up temporary residence on top of him. Arnold wasn't exactly a model either and knew that he could only play in his own league but he was still a man. It would probably be impolite, he figured, not to take a look at the woman who sat on him and least show his appreciation for whatever beauty she did possess. Struggling for something to say he settled on a wink and a sly smile followed by, "Name's Arnold. Long day at work?"
Amy looked at Arnold and wondered if he bought the pants he was wearing already worn in and full of holes, that's the style now isn't it, or if he was just some kind of slob who couldn't take care of his clothing. "I'm Amy" Long day at work? she asked herself, How tired do I look? "Another day another dime" and she shrugged and smiled sweetly but not too sweetly. She didn't want to lead him on.
Another day another dime? Is that supposed to be funny? Arnold wondered. Maybe I should laugh a little... but not too much. So he did. "Want to sit down?" Arnold moved over a little to try to make some room for Amy. Least of all maybe she won't fall on his lap if the bus takes another sharp turn. Worst thing that could happen is that she sits next to him while he continues to read his VCR manual.
"Sure. Thanks" What do I saw now? Amy wondered.
"So..." Arnold again, being smooth
"Yeah..." Amy desperately searched her mind for some kind of small talk. Obviously I'm stuck talking to this guy. I hope he's interesting. "Great weather we're having isn't it?"
It's fucking cold. "Yeah" The weather? Arnold figured he could come up with something better than that. "Did you see the hockey game last night?"
Hockey? "No. I'm not really into hockey. Who won?"
"I have no idea. I thought you might know" I'll have to check when I get home. "Do you work downtown?"
"Yeah. At the department store. I sell furniture" Should I have told him that?
"Oh yeah? I'll have to come see you. I need a new couch" There ya go. There's something we can talk about.
"What happened to yours?" Maybe he has a cat?
"Nothing... just time to update my... apartment" I don't know where I'd put a couch in my studio apartment but this has got her talking.
"No time like the present I guess" I wonder if his apartment smells as bad as he does?
"That's true. Hey, why don't you give me your number? I'll give you a call sometime and you can ... give me decorating tips?" Man, I'm no good at this but it's worth a shot.
"umm" this isn't my stop but how do I do this without being mean. oh god and he knows where I work. the last thing I need is a stalker. "well" Amy stood up and pulled the cord for the next stop. "It was nice meeting you" careful Amy... the guy's reading a vcr manual and it's the 21st century. he might be crazy. "but..." OK the bus is coming to a stop. time to get off and end this "I'm a lesbian. Have a nice day."
