But I will go down with this ship and I won't put my hands up and surrender

Why Harry/Hermione?

I've shipped Harry and Hermione unconsciously since the release of book five (back when I was twelve) and consciously since I was fourteen. So perhaps it's because they're not only one of my favorite ships but one of my first ships that these two take the coveted all-time OTP spot. Every time I think I'm close to falling out of love with this pair something pulls me back and I remember why I dedicated so many years writing fanfics, vidding, and taking part in discussions about this epic ship. Harry and Hermione are probably the world's most famous non-canon pairing, and for good reason. From the very first book Harry and Hermione have an unspoken connection. Hermione acts as Harry's voice of reason, and Harry (at least later on, when he matures), in turn, is the source of support and encouragement that Hermione so dreadfully needs. Yes, every once in a while they falter, but for the most part they are there for each other. They have stuck by each other's sides throughout the entire series. When everyone thought that Harry had put his name in the cup Hermione believed him immediately. Even though Harry wasn't exactly fond of SPEW he never put it down and tried to find words that would keep up Hermione's spirits. In moments of panic and anger it was, more often than not, Hermione or Hermione's words that calmed Harry, and in times of danger Harry worried about Hermione above everyone else (notice even that when Sirius dies Harry finds the ability to take action, yet when he thinks Hermione's dead he freezes, he can't function). Hermione was the first person to show him physical affection (her hug in Phlosopher's Stone), and while Rowling never explored this first it's resonated with me for quite some time. They can communicate without words, and when they do communicate with words others are often left behind in confusion, unable to follow. They are in every way true equals. Even after Rowling sunk this ship with the infamous "Interview of Doom" the unintentional love story between Harry and Hermione continued. The three chapters in Deathly Hallows are breathtaking, and when Harry and Hermione walk in the freshly fallen snow, underneath the stars and then leave the graveyard in one another's embrace...it's quite honestly, in my opinion, the most romantic moment of the series. Yes, I admit that every once in a while I still find myself upset that Harry and Hermione were never canon, but then I look at all the wonderful moments we did get, the subtle development of their friendship into (in my opinion again) something more...and I find that I wouldn't have it any other way. I maintain that the Harry and Hermione's relationship unintentionally became a beautiful love story, and really, that's why it's so amazing. Harry and Hermione may fade in my mind as the years pass, but they will forever be my first One True Pairing.
