Okie... first review entry... hmm... I had to think a little bit before choosing what to review and here's my choice: the Dark Hunters series
by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Why? Because it's my current favorite series and
because Sherrilyn Kenyon is an awesome, but awesome author. Not only
her writing is good, but she's also very close to her fans and
providing a lot of activities for her fans :) I guess I would say she's
the nicest of all the authors...
So what's the Dark Hunters series about?
This series is about vampires... but vampires à la Sherrilyn. It all
started when Apollo wanted to prove to Zeus that he could create a
superior race to humans and therefore, he created the Apollites.
However, Zeus wasn't happy, so he decided to match Apollo with a human
woman. Meanwhile, the Apollite Queen, also Apollo's wife, was jealous
and sent her warriors to assasinate the human woman and ordered them to
pass the crime as an animal attacks. However, Apollo discovered the
truth and angry, he cursed his race: they would get the abilities of
animals, i.e. fangs, with increased physcial abilities (speed, etc.),
they would never be able to be in contact with sunlight anymore and
they would die at 27, the same age as his beloved human died,
atroceously. However, the Apollites found a way to live longer than 27
years: suck the souls (ousia) of humans by sucking their blood.... and
so, these Apollites become Daimons.
As the number of Daimons increased, Artemis came up with Dark hunters,
her personal army to get rid of Daimons... basically, dark hunters are
the same as Apollites: they have fangs and cannot be in the sunlight.
Most of them have special abilities. Also, dark hunters immortal are
souless as they have gave up their souls in order to get an Act of
Revenge...basically, they are at the mercy of Artemis... and under the
leadership of Acheron, the oldest dark hunter.
Between Dark hunters, Apollites and Daimons, they are Were Hunters.
Were Hunters were created by a sorcerer king who wanted to save his 2
sons, half-Apollites. The Sorcerer King thought that by Apollites with
animals, he could extend their longivity... he tried many species:
dragons, wolves, jackals, panters, lions, bears, etc... and then, chose
dragons and wolves because they were the strongest. As a result, he
created a race who could control magic, take an animal form and live
more than 800-900 years. Unfortunately, because he tampered with lives,
the Three Fates weren't happy and therefore cursed the 2 sons... from
then on, Were-hunters were divided into 2 sub-species: acardian and
katagarian. Acardian have the heart of human, so their base form is
human and once they reach puberty, they can turn into animals. while
Katagarian have the heart of animal and their base form is animal.
Additionally, the Three Fates decided to make them ennemies so they
would fight for the rest of their existence. oh by the way, almost
forgot... Were-hunters have the ability to time-travel... quite handy
no?
There are also Dream-hunters... but so far, no Dream-hunter has been main characters, so I can't really describe them ^^;
Also, Dark Hunters are supported by a human network: Squires...
They are humans who served the dark hunters and help them when needed...
This series is very good... in fact, fascinating. You can see that
Sherrilyn Kenyon has put lots of efforts and planning into the story.
There are a lots of characters, but in my opinion, it's still awesome
;) It's very complex and she's added lots of culture and mythology:
Greek, Atlantis, vikings, etc. but everything ties up together and
Acheron is really awesome :D Lots of laugh guaranteed and smutty scenes
:)
