Last week Saturday (the 18th) I headed to the
BWCAW (Boudry Waters Canoe Area Wilderness) up past Deluth Minesota for a week with my father and Jake. Best week I've had in a long time... and to top it off I got to catch up with the KTX for a late night movie and some weird ass dogs the night before. Being out in the middle of nowhere was awesome. It took us two and a half days to canoe into our base camp (camp 3 on the map) where we just chilled for three nights. And let me tell you what nights those were. With the nearest form of civilization over 50 miles away there is no light to drown out the stars, you can see everything from the milky way to satellites to comets and meteores galore. The days we spent reading, jumping off cliffs into water, a failed rope swing to launch ourselves, fishing, paddling and not much else. It was paradise. For our two day trip out we took the longer route that had some portages about a mile long (carrying a 65 pound canoe, a 40 pound canoe, and two 50 pound bags each over two trips on a mile portage is not exactly a walk in the part, especially with mosquitoes crowding under the canoes over our heads). But it paid off well, several of the portages went along side small river beds that carried water from lake to lake and in one of them was the most perfect natural jacuzzi you could ever ask for. Needless to say we spent a couple hours in the sun sitting in the turning waters eating lunch. Did I mention paradise? After a large T-Cell blew in causing us to camp our last night one lake ahead of schedule we busted our last portages and made landfall at the outfitters. Needless to say, the warm showers at the outfitters left me feeling less clean than the "jacuzzi" in the wilderness... I don't think I've ever felt cleaner than after stepping out of that water. Oh, that was another cool thing, the weather must have changed at least three times a day while we were up there; I've never seen that here in Milwaukee. And I've got to mention this too, the water up there is so clean you can drink it straight out of the lakes. And each lake had it's own minute taste that was barely strong enough to discern but made each lake a new treat. This one lake had a hint of pine in it's water, best water I've ever tasted.
Anyhow, we got back around 1am the following Saturday and we find out we have to go back out the door right away to go to the nursing home where my grandfather is on his death bed. He was essentially in a coma and there was so much liquid in his body he would gurgle when he breathed. As we left I balled hard... I hadn't seen him for some time and it really hit me when I did. He passed away this Wednesday afternoon and we had the family over that night and tonight they are all over again making the "arrangements". It's all rather interesting.
Tomorrow I'm getting up at 4am to crew a
hotair balloon for a dying cancer victim. Then I've got another flight tomorrow evening and a possible third on Saturday. I'm really digging it because I get to log the flight hours and keep them for when I go to get my fixed wing craft liscense, Woo!
I'm not forgetting about that DDR party either! It'll probably be more of a old friends party with DDR on the side, but that's besides the point. Hopefully withing the next couple weeks... we'll see.
