Switch on & off mechanism in genes discovered!

genes in chromosomes have a "switch on and off" system working through the RNA interference (RNAi), which plays a vital role in development of the animal and human body. "Genes in chromosomes switch on and off like electrical switches and play a role in the development of body. Genes placed in two different areas normally express, but when they require to switch off in the developmental body part, they come closer".
The finding suggests that fascinating mechanism of RNAi machinery not only influences the regulations of a specific gene but also helps in bringing genes from different chromosomes together, which is essential for growth and maintenance of organisation.

"This is a major contribution by our paper. We first show that developmental protein is controlled by switch on and off mechanism and that is regulated by chromosomal long distance interaction of different identical genes of different chromosomes. Different chromosomes in different places normally express themselves and if they need to switch off they come closer together and silence".
"In appearance fruitfly and humans are way apart, but they have many similarities and body plans", said Utpal Bhadra. Citing example of how the switch on and off of genes by RNAi affect development of the body, Utpal Bhadra said when two particular genes, involved in the development of the wing of the fly, were brought together, it led to their silencing and growth of wing became distorted. But when the same genes were restored to their original positions, growth of the wing became normal.
