Short story: I am hugely interested in your personal experiences and thoughts and advice about treating adult acne.
I've been on the pill for a long time and now want to go off. Last time I did, face went crazy. I am not vain in general, and my skin has not been blemish or completely pimple free with the pill, but I do NOT want to go back to crazy face.
Long story: as a teenager I had some of those typical teenager skin breakouts, but they were over all relatively harmless. I needed the pill due to issues with cycle (I bled for a week and not for 10 days and again for a week and had menstrual pains), and it improved my skin also. About 18 months ago I had noticed that my face was getting worse, I had lots of little white/skin coloured spots on my forehead and often bigger, red/white ones on my chin. I was diagnosed with adult acne by a dermatologist and, in consultation with my gyn, was presribed another pill, speficically against hormonal acne. Worked like a charm, my face cleared up apart from the odd ones (that I can live with :-)), but now I want to stop taking it. I don't need it as a birth control, I cannot any longer in good conscience pee all those hormones into the sewer (changes the frogs and stuff) if I don't really need them, and I've come to know that one half of my family has hereditary liver troubles. I'd be smart to trouble my liver as little as possible if I don't want to end up like everybody else in that family tree.
Lifestyle: I am lactose intolerant and thus don't eat a lot of dairy. Some cheese like gouda or a cup of yoghurt every two weeks or so. I eat ricemilk often instead. I'm not a sugar junkie but I guess I could eat less, I do like the cakes I bake... (which contain only about half the sugar in most american recepies). I limit wheat since it gives me tummy troubles when stressed. I eat lots of vegetables, potatoes, fruit, oatmeal with cinnamon and a banana in the morning, and fish once a week and meat once or twice a week. I sometimes drink alcohol, a beer or two or vodka shot. I sleep 7-8 hours every night, don't smoke, and get lots of fresh air every day. My weight is good, my fitness could be better but I've had lots of colds, and now that those are clearing up I am slowly starting my little exercise regime again. My blood just got tested and the thyroid is good. I have noticed that my skin gets worse when I eat chips/crisps and fast food.
I am thus looking for your knowledge, personal observations: what helped you or a friend, what made it worse, did your face clear up without medication or did you have to go back to some kind of pill?
I will be off from tomorrow morning on for a week (yay, holiday :-), so I will probably respond in 6-7 days. Since this coming Thursday is the last day of the pill ( I am a bit scared), I am very much looking forward to your comments!!!!
