Stuff growing in Apple Cider Vinegar?

Mar 18, 2012 22:40

I have a bottle of Anchor brand apple cider vinegar sitting on the windowsill in our bathroom, we use it for cleaning walls, rinsing hair etc.

Recently it's developed what looks almost like algae or fungus growing in the bottle. It's kinda filmy and greyish. Anyone know what this is? Is the vinegar still safe to use?

It may be Mother of Vinegar. If it is, it's harmless. Maybe compare some Google images to be sure.
If you are really uncertain, you could always toss it just to be safe.

Sound like you have a mother. Make more vinegar!

I don't really have the facilities or excess alcohol to make more though. :(

That is a biofilm called "mother of vinegar." It's a good sign that you've good a hearty vinegar - you can use that biofilm to start another vinegar, too.

Well, even a commercial apple cider (i.e. the stuff that they give to kids) would make a vinegar. :) Anyway, something to think about trying - take cider, add some mother of vinegar, store in warm, dark place, and see what happens.
