Purifying water in nature

Nov 23, 2011 23:48

I checked the memories and I didn't find anything on this.  I figure this is the best place to ask, since my friend and I are both into natural living and being healthy.

My friend and I planning on going on a long road trip in a few months.  We are planning on doing a lot of camping along the way, both to save money, and because we like camping.  She is going to bring her dog and I am going to bring my parrot.

I'm looking for a small (and preferably inexpensive) way to purify outside water, to protect against things like giardia and cryptosporidium.  We will be traveling in a small car, and won't have room to carry a lot.  I was thinking of using colloidal silver, or food grade hydrogen peroxide, but there are also filters that filter these things out.  I've heard that iodine tablets taste bad.

Also, if anyone knows a way of preventing illness if an exposure happens (for humans and animals), it would be greatly appreciated.  Does anyone have any experience with these things?  What do you think?  I just love the idea of drinking all my water from a stream or a spring.  :-)

Any other camping tips are welcome!  I know to bring first aid, sleep stuff, food and TP.  I've done some camping, but not much "real" camping.

Thank you, everyone!
