Coconut Oil for Sun Block?

Aug 13, 2011 10:29

In my trawls through the skincare: sun tag, I have noticed there is next to NO advice for what to rub into the skin to PREVENT sunburn, only lots of reminders to wear clothes.
That's good advice, but not very helpful to me personally because I always wear clothes; I'm a big fan of being clothed. But this is the nicest summer I've spent away from my computer since high school and I want to go outside. Two people said coconut oil works well as a sunblock. Is this true? Are there any studies to back the claim up? I'm a little concerned about rubbing an oil into my skin because I don't understand how sunlight can refract inside the skin, which apparently it does? And then it shoots straight into the delicate cells at uncomfortable angles? That's how sunburn and cancer begin, apparently? I just don't understand, but I know I don't want to use the unregulated oils and chemicals that the stores sell. Can anyone explain the science to me and advise me on the coconut oil, please?

EDIT: Thank you so much, everyone. It looks like most people think coconut oil is better as a tanning aid, so I'm not going to use it, but I will look into the resources some of you provided. You have all been very helpful!
