Agreed with the Diva Cup comment...totally life changing...WAYY more convenient and cleaner than tampons, imho.

Also, why the no-poo thing? Just curious. That's been life changing for me too. I'll never, ever go back to using shampoo ever again even if I had all the money in the world to buy the organic, no chemical stuff.

Btw, I'm totally a prissy girl...not your typical hippie type at all!

Why do the no 'poo thing if already using all natural shampoo? I guess I don't understand it.

Also, I read about the "phases" your hair can go through while starting out, getting really oily and stuff. That's one of the things I hate the most because I like to look nice and professional for my job.

Basically, shampoo's job is to strip your hair of it's natural oils and then you use conditioner to add those oils back in. No such thing as "natural" shampoo because what it does is totally unnatural. After doing the no-poo thing, your hair finds its natural balance and doesn't look greasy.

I never had the "oily phase" with my hair and honestly, I don't know a lot of people who do. I was in an office job, working with a ton of clients when I switched over and I never looked dirty or unprofessional. Also, I add essential oils to the vinegar so it smells like good shampoo, and not like vinegar! It's made my hair shinier and stronger and I don't have dandruff anymore!

Ah, I thought the shampoos that were considered to be natural didn't do that. Do you just do the basic baking soda wash/apple cider vinegar rinse? What essential oils are the best for hair?

I suppose it's worth a try. How often are you supposed to wash your hair?

Unless you get something like the Morocco Method shampoos, which are insanely expensive, they all act the same as regular shampoos.

Okay, here's my not-so-scientific method:
I keep an 8 oz cup in my shower and fill it about 1/4 full of baking soda. I then fill it up to the top with water from the shower, shake it up and dump it over my head. I massage it in like it's normal shampoo and then rinse it out.

Then, I fill the cup 1/4 full with ACV and about 5 drops of essential oil. Fill the rest up with water and dump over your head again. Leave it in for about a minute and then rinse really well.

I have no idea what oils are good for your hair, I just chose one that was cheap and smelled good! I use lemongrass oil.

What I read was that you are supposed to use 1 tablespoon of baking soda per cup (8 oz) of water - so you could be using a lot less (and therefore making it last longer and saving money, lol) and still getting great results. :)

Oh, and I do this about every 3 days or so. I've done it every day and every other day too but don't really notice a difference either way.

Thanks so much! I'll try it... I just need to get baking soda with my next paycheck. We hardly have anything in the house! It's sad.

Heh, I totally understand! If you can, get it at costco...it's like 5 bucks for a 10 pound bag!

Or, shampoo bars are a really great alternative! I have one from j.r. liggett (if you do try one, be sure to get a completely natural one), and it's really brought out my curls/made my hair shiny!

Also, to get rid of dandruff, try massaging your head/scalp every time you wash. Just get in there with your fingertips and scrub around, especially along the hairline. It worked for me! :)

Just FWIW, and to be a contrarian voice, I had horrible problems trying the so-called no'poo method, and it was completely unsuitable for my hair and environment. Perhaps my hair would have eventually balanced out, but I couldn't take the time past my vacation days (2 weeks) to find out if it would.

What is your hair like? Mine's thick, kind of dry (but gets oily quickly without washing it every day), and wavy/frizzy. And I live in humid South Carolina.

Let's see, at the time I was living in upstate New York - so humid, but not as humid as where you are. I have very fine blonde hair that shows oil after about two days of not washing, and will easily change several shades of colour if I don't wash every other day (or daily, if it's really hot and humid out).

I'm in Philly now, and the weather is such that I would never consider anything but what I use now - apple cider vinegar and Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner.

I'm transitioning into no-poo (been at it for about a month now), and I think having access to soft water you can wash your hair with is pretty crucial. I've been having issues lately because of poor water quality, so I've been experimenting with better water than what comes out of the tap. I live in Southern California, and I'm pretty sure we have the hardest tap water in the country. There's a no_poo community, if you're interested.

Your hair sounds like mine. I tried the no 'poo method and it was definitely NOT for me.

I had horrible luck with no-poo as well. I gave it a full week of ponytails and hats before I finally had to give up.

I have oily skin, relatively thin, wavy-ish hair, FYI. I think no-poo works best for people with curly or dry hair (or both!).
