I had been struggling to find a natural deodorant that actually worked forever. I tried the crystal deodorant, Lush bar deodorant and Tom's. I found a combination that worked so-so, but not great. Finally I made my own from this recipe. I love it so so so so much. It works wonderfully. I never worry about being smelly even when I go for long hikes. It's just perfect.

Almost.

Here's where I need your help. While it does what it's supposed to, it also seems to be irritating my pits. I get really dry skin (from friction with the baking soda, I think) and it discolors to a very dark brown. I'm white and I have had trouble with commercial deodorants discoloring my underarm the other way... I have depigmented patches on both of my underarms.

So far I've been "taking a break" from the homemade stuff on days that I know I won't be overly active (and therefore smelly). But sometimes I just can't trust the other methods and after awhile I wonder if I'm causing damage to my skin.  I don't think the damage is nearly as bad as the commercial deodorants, but I'd love to be able to lift my arms in a tank top!

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can tweak the recipe to make it more gentle? I'm not looking for other product recommendations (lord knows there's enough of those in the history!). I'm looking for a gentle homemade recipe and since this one works so well, I'm more interested in tweaking this than trying something new.
