Neutralizing smokey odors?

Aug 31, 2009 12:21

Hi all,
Long story short I recently moved into a townhome, and my new neighbors smoke like chimneys. (I have pretty nasty allergies to several types of cigs) So far I've tried cleaning everything well, leaving out baking soda, leaving out vinegar, using air filters + air purifiers, the smell might disapate for a little while but then comes back stronger than ever.  i tihnk some of this was definitely left over from previous tenant because she was a smoker as well, and I have had the management clean the carpets etc.

Does anyone have any "natural" ways to get rid of smokey odor?  (Ie I don't really want to use something like febreeze unless I absolutely positively have to.)  Opening windows won't work as they smoke outside too apparently.

My other question, along the same lines is this: I keep finding references to planting plants that can neutralize smokey type odors, but not any lists of plants that are good for it  Does anyone have any experience with this? Or ideas of stuff to plant in containers for this purpose? I have two patios and a balcony I can utilize, as well as putting stuff inside, and am currently on the edge of zones 8a/8b and my home faces front door to east- back door to west.  (so on the east side I have one patio and balcony, on the west side I have another one)
