Dishwashing

So we've had the discussion about hand washing v. automatic dishwashers and several talks about different brands of soap (and even making your own!)

My question is this:

What is the efficacy and environmental impact of liquid v. powder automatic diswashing soaps?  What about laundry soaps?

There is the obvious argument about the amount of water that you are paying for (using energy to ship) but often manufacturing process use the water to start with then extract it later to sell.  There are also some issues with powder and septic tanks I have heard (any truth to this?).  Liquid soap comes in plastic, whereas powder comes in cardboard.  Are there solubility issues (affecting the temperature of the water you need to dissolve the powder quickly enough and/or falling out of solution somewhere in the winter, etc..)

Also, as a sidenote; has anyone heard of or used Bright Green?  I saw in the store the last time I was there and I had never seen/heard of it before but it looked like it might be ok.

ETA: The box says that it is biodegradable, no petroleum solvents, phosphate free, not tested on animals, naturally derived ingredients/surfactants (whatever that means), VOC free, and the packaging is 55% post-consumer waste (100% recycled cardboard).

Ingredients are : naturally derived sodium carbonate, sodium citrate, sodium silicate, sodium chloride, plant derived surfactant, naturally derived enzymes

Just curious...looking for feedback. :)

Thanks in advance!
