My former brother in law is dying of cancer right now, and he isn't even 50 years old. Two of my uncles died of lung cancer in their 50's. When we went to visit my Uncle Keith in the hospital, right after he had his surgery, we found him in the smoker's lounge dragging on a cigarette with stitches going all around his neck. :-(
It looks as if I am going to lose my favourite aunt to this disease, as well.
My ex husband smoked and he would not do it in the house or in the car, because of me, but I would wake up every morning to him hacking and coughing like a 90 year old man and was afraid for him all the time.
I hate smoking...I am so allergic to it. My lungs burn, my eyes pour, my nose gets immediately stuffed up, my head aches...even if there is only ONE smoker nearby me.
And I hate what this disease does to the people who are hooked on it. I hope anyone who is young and just starting will read this and quit. It only gets harder as you get older, believe me. I have seen many people try and fail to quit, over and over again. You don't want to end up like them, sick or dead.
Sorry for the rant. It is a lovely bar and a nice remembrance. I never got to watch the show but heard lots of good things about it.
I lost my father to cancer, but not smoking related, he had it in his jaw. I fully agree with all your comments about smoking. I seem to suffer the same symptoms as you when there are smokers around. Luckily, here in England we are going to have smoke free pubs, restaurants and clubs by law. The only problem is, we have to wait till the end of next summer for it to become law! Babylon 5 is a great show if you ever get a chance to catch it, by the way.
One of the reasons that I moved to this province was that there were such strict non smoking laws. There is no smoking in any public places, including restaurants. I may not be able to afford to go out, but if I do, I don't have to swallow nicotine.
