My MIL is an OB-GYN nurse and she regularly expresses her "concern" about our choice to have a home birth.
The two I have been present for were wondering how the midwife would know if the baby was in distress, and talk about how everyone *needs* to be induced if they go more than 10 days past their due date (despite the fact that my husband was born 10 days late!).
Well, both times I have witnessed him stand up to her and start telling her facts about why home birth is safe, why one doesn't have to induce at day 10, etc.
His father tells him that he shouldn't be arguing with a professional in the field, and yet he still holds his ground.
:-D
She was rather shocked yesterday when she tried to argue her case on why we should go to the hospital with the line "We have the highest infant mortality rate of all the developed countries" ... and we were like, "Yup, we sure do! ... We also have the highest c-section rate, and the rate in our city is even higher than the national average! ... it's things like that which contributed to our choice for a home birth."
Unfortunately, not only has she not taken them time to get even the simplest of educations on home birth to know that midwives have ways of telling things without tonnes of fancy hospital monitoring devices (she WAS relieved when "dopper radar" came out of my mouth), but she turned down our invitation not only to attend our birth, but also to come to an appointment with our midwife where she could have discussed all of her questions and concerns.
C'est le vie. I saw a doctor in her practice that she really recommended and he threw a bunch of scare tactics at me during my first visit ever with him... so who knows what she's heard from him.
But yay for my husband standing up for home birth, AND natural birth when she throws the "I loved my epidural birth so much more than my natural birth" comments out.
In the early part of my pregnancy he was wary about not seeing an OB and the idea of home birth... and now he's so behind it that he defends it to his own mother!
