- Oh Captain my Captain - a formally good man who's been telling lies for so long I'm not sure he even knows which of his own truths are actually true any more. I'd definitely classify him squarely into the category of scoundrels that the universe turned into a 'bad guy' who lives outside the law because the laws are definitely something no good person can fight for. That said, I think Mal is very, very lucky to have a deadpanned Zoe standing behind - and watching - his back to keep him in line from time to time. (Actually I've been catching Angel off and on in the mornings, and I see a lot of Mal's personality developing in the writing for Angel's character as the series progresses. Probably part of why I love Angel in his own series 100% more than I did in BtVS.) Also, has some of the best one-liners in the entire series. ;)
- Honestly, while I much enjoy the back and forth he has with Inara- in my head they would indeed have had very hot sexy fun times if either one of them had ever caved in, my "OTP" for Mal is essentially just like my one for Captain Jack Sparrow - aka Jack/the Sea (/Horizon/the Black Pearl/freedom). The man definitely deserves some love, but by the end of the series/Serenity movie I'm not quite sure he's ready for it, if that makes any sense? Mal's very much a work-in-progress, and I think that's part of why I love him so much.
- How he's totally Kaylee's big brother sub in whether he ever officially admits it or not. ♥ (Additionally, the platonic relationship he has with Zoe is also phenomenal.)
- I'm afraid I don't know enough about him within the fandom to be 100% what's popular or not...? Although I honestly don't get why there's a vocal percentage that what's to ship him with Simon of all people - IMO their personalities would clash horribly romantically just this side of why he/Jayne would be a bad idea.
- I feel like Joss really did wrap Mal up nicely for where he was character-wise by the end of the movie - that scene with he and River in particular was a lovely closing scene in my book. Not that there wasn't more story to tell per say, but I didn't feel a big gaping whole of questions where Mal was concerned.
- I'd like to get into his back story more someday - always love reading fic for this.
