Any, any, finding a half-drowned bird' for last
Thursday's comment_fic.
Um, I don't ever write Cassie, but in my head canon she totally tag teams checking up on Tobias with Toby on random weekends, etc. Half drowned became soggy and attacked by other wild animal because of reasons.
Also OMG I WROTE ANI-FIC THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RACHEL. THE WORLD IS ENDING, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!
When she'd first seen the small huddled mass of broken feather and bone lying limply on the sodden forest floor, her heart had stuttered in her chest in a way it hadn't since the day the majority of the Yeerk army had surrendered nearly a year ago.
Her practically inbred veterinary knowledge fled her before the combined wave of icy fear and the clingy, corrosive guilt over the other teammate no one could save, not a distant a thing of the past as she would like, that spiked through her veins.
Stop.
Breath.
Help.
Of their own accord her body and mind somehow overwrote her heart, and Cassie watched herself- as if she was somehow floating somewhere above both of them in the curtain of steady rainfall- kneel down on the saturated path and gently reach towards the injured hawk.
Mud caked the mussed feathers and blood stained them even further from their original healthy hues, but the bird was moving weakly and it was not not dead.
It also wasn't Tobias. This red-tailed hawk was much too young.
But it could have been.
