Labour in 2012

During some conversation last night my feelings on Labour's current political actions finally crystalised. Since the election and through the budget I've had the sense that they were doing things because they had to and I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I feel you pain, man. Been there, done that, have seen the corrosive influence of being in Government. And why is it that supposedly liberal, progrssive parties (for whatever value you'd care to assign to those words) seem to have such a thing for restricting alcohol? I was pretty pissed off that the PDs' policy of liberalising pub licensing laws got dropped and replaced by... the 10 pm offie deadline.

The minimum alcohol price idea is economically daft - it's an incredible gift to retailers. We could increase taxes but no, let's just give the price increases to alcohol sellers by putting into effect higher profit margins. If retailers tried to do this voluntarily it's be anticompetitive and illegal!

As for the internet: one of the shocking things about the e-voting fiasco years ago was that the policies being put forward weren't even politically beneficial to the Government. There were no votes to be won. Similarly with the current issues, the politicians aren't being sly or evil or cunning, they're just fighting a fight because... well I'm not sure why, actually. Probably just momentum: u-turns are even worse than being wrong or unpopular.
