15 year old highschool freshman Kirsten Delaune is granted super strength in a freak microwave accident. She relies on her older brother, Kevin, a comic nerd, for guidance, and he tries to pressure her into becoming a superhero to fight local crime, under the pseudonym Hypertrophy. Kirsten just wants to fit in, but she finds it difficult to go unnoticed when her muscles start developing on her already stocky frame. As bullying escalates at school, Kirsten must also juggle her brother’s constant nagging that she take up acts of heroism. Kevin develops his own alter ego and starts staging petty crimes involving friends, family, and small animals in an attempt to manipulate Kirsten into fighting crime. Although Kirsten takes the bait, it takes a direct toll on her schoolwork and her physical appearance, causing her grades to drop and Kirsten to fall asleep in class, and she must constantly choose between her moral obligation and her obligations to herself. Kirsten has been invited to prom by a friend of her older brother, but when Kevin takes himself hostage and the situation escalates with local gang involvement, Kirsten chooses to forego fun to save her older brother. Kirsten is not impervious to pain or injury, and gets hurt during the skirmish, which results in a hospital stay and the loss of her powers once and for all.
