Written for heather916  who is brilliant, wonderful, amazing, and so many other adjectives that I can't think of them. So this is just a bit of fluff for you. And thanks to amberfocus who beta'd this for me.

“Would you mind repeating that for me.” It was a statement, not a question and judging by the look on her husband’s face he had clearly heard her and he was not happy.

“Mum, Pete, and Tony are coming over for dinner,” Rose stated again and when he didn’t answer she turned her attention back to the mail which had piled up during her absence.  She didn’t need to look at her husband’s face to know that there was a mixture of shock, anger, and disappointment.  She knew it wouldn’t take long for him to express his feelings, in fact she should hear something in three, two, o…

“Rose.”

There it was, right on cue, the whining. She smiled inwardly, happy that her knowledge of her husband never changed no matter how long she had been away and she had to quell the overwhelming desire to kiss him.

“Doctor,“ she replied scooting closer to him on the couch,  placing a reassuring hand on his knee, and squeezing.  “I haven’t seen my family in six weeks, I just thought…”

“That’s the problem, you didn’t think,” he threw at her. Rose was ready to retort when he added, “And when you say family, does that all of a sudden exclude me?”

“Don’t be ridiculous, you know it doesn’t,” Rose laughed, shocked that he would even think such a thing. Those six weeks must have been harder on him then she had thought.

“Oh great, so now my wife thinks I’m ridiculous,” he shouted throwing off her hand and standing up.

She stood up in return, her frustration mounting, but tried to keep her voice calm. “If you think I don’t count you as family then yes, you are ridiculous.”

They stood facing each other eyes boring into one another, the silence between the two of them deafening. This was not the homecoming that she had envisioned. After six weeks on assignment for Torchwood in Mexico City she had imagined a quick family dinner and then a night showing her husband just how much she had missed him. Rose did not want her plans spoiled by a fight or the Doctor’s old insecurities about their relationship.

Quelling her anger she reached for his hand and interlocked their fingers, relieved when he didn’t pull away. Reaching with her free hand she stroked his face, taking in the new worry lines that had developed while she was gone. “You silly, silly man,” she said quietly, her words punctuated with love.  “I left home when I was nineteen for you. You’ve been my family ever since.”

“Rose,” he tried to interrupt, but she put her fingers to his lips.

“No, let me finish,” she admonished quietly. “I’ve told Jake and Pete that I will not be coming into work for the next week. Seven days in which I am all yours.  You just need to make it through two hours with my mother and after that, Pete has promised not to let her bother us until I go back to work.”

She smiled at him and was relieved to see that he looked a bit calmer than before. Suddenly his face broke into a wide grin. “Rose, this is fantastic!”

“I know,” she said with a giggle as he lifted her off her feet and swung her around.

“Seven Jackie free days! Do you know your mother has insisted that she stop by every day since you’ve been gone? It was as if the woman didn’t think I could take care of myself.” Rose quirked her eyebrow at him as if to say, “You can’t.”

“What?” he asked incredulously, “I’ll have you know that I was looking after myself for hundreds of years before you Tylers came along.”

“I know.” She leaned up and kissed him gently. “You just never did a very good job of it.”

She gave her stunned husband one more quick kiss and headed to the kitchen to prepare the meal and found only a half empty jar of jam and a banana.
