Ukrainian ultra-nationalism - a glimpse into pure hatred

Mar 09, 2022 13:02

Introduction

This article is in 3 parts, provides a series of snippets of words, deeds, images and videos from Ukrainian and corporate MSM sources.  As the conflict rages on in Ukraine, some remarkably dreadful comments and statements are made in the Ukrainian press and on social media.   The conflict has accelerated and sharply intensified the vile hatred and laid wide open the ever present violent hatred for Russian speakers and Russians in general.

The commonplace attitudes and relentless outpouring of evil expressed by Ukrainians nationalists has been unmasked many times since 2014, and this article outlines several examples, especially regarding children, then the final part relates to the corporate media angle that singlehandedly presents nationalists in a more positive light while whitewashing or ignoring the murkier aspects.

Dear reader: Work in progress - additional information is welcomed and will be added.

PART 1 - Banality of evil

Why do the corporate MSM, pundits and politicians keep insisting that the allegations of genocide in Donbas is "erroneous"?

Of course, corporate MSM in the West is restricted in its ability to provide news, instead, there is a steady of stenographer style articles, recopying what is released by officials.  Worse still, is the crass manipulation of images to imply the reverse of what actually happened.  With this in mind, there are just a handful of nazis in Ukraines and anyone suggesting that it is a serious problem is part of Russian disinformation.  However some of the best examples come directly from Ukrainians themselves.  Practically none of this is ever shown or talked about in the West.

What kind of statement is this, if it doesn't fit into the category of "calling for a genocide"? This week, a Ukrainian journalist from the TV channel '24', Fahruddin Sharafmal quotes Adolf Eichmann, "in order to destroy a nation you must destroy, first of all,  the children." He then says that all the children of Russian speaking people must be cut out so that they do not grow up and avenge a Ukrainian victory.  He also adds "and I hope that everyone will contribute and kill at least one Muscovite."

This is a chilling statement advocating the extermination of all Russians, to make on air, yet it wasn't nor will it be the last time though.

In an TV livestream on Ukraine 24 , a mobile medical group leader, Gennadiy Druzenko, explained to the journalists how he instructed to castrate Russian POWs because they're cockroaches and not human. (To note this TV channel hasn't been banned under the latest Ukrainian decree).

It needs little explanation that he is a Maidan activist, a lawyer turned medical professional, with a photo of him in camouflage wearing the Right Sector insignia, the 'Hospitalers', part of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army.

Again, I emphasise that these sources are straight from the horse's mouth, they are Ukrainians who reveal their true colours.  If the two previous video extracts weren't enough of a powerful merciless attitude, then this one is a hat trick:

- Vladislav Vitsko (@Vlad_Vitsko) March 21, 2022

These are the latest examples of a rhetoric for the removal, culturally elimination, and murder of ethnic Russians in Ukraine.  The chorus of hate has circulated openly since Spring 2014.

Other instances of banal suggestions:

The statement made by the Deputy Mayor of Dnipro that Chechen  soldiers who get killed, will be warped up and  buried in pigskins.

Ukrainian nationalist online threat to brand Russian POWs

They literally applauded a massacre in Odessa back in 2014.

Part 2: The period 2014 -2020

The idea that it is adversarial propaganda that ultra-nationalists wanted to commit a genocide, is not readily backed-up in the media, video or opinions, if one is able or willing to look carefully or even bother to pay attention to the overall picture  and a series of little details presented since 2014.

The evil intention harboured by a swath of Ukrainian society, in the media, in politics, in the military, police, is too numerous to catalogue here in this article.

Scene 1

This clip from Ukrainian TV back in May 2014 sets the scene, in which a journalist nonchalantly discusses eliminating a million and a half population from Donbass.  This is a journalist who worked for an US and Dutch financed Ukrainian media.

A series of snapshots, images that circulated on social media which illustrates a commonplace hatred for all people termed "Russian", "Moscovites", highly disturbing macabre humour.

Scene 2

An Ukrainian dressed up in WW2 SS uniform, at a shawarma stand with Ukrainian colours and that has a big  sign: "I sell Russian kids' kebabs."  He is holding an US flag.  Dark humour that isn't a one-off.

Scene 3

Continuing with the trend of Russian speaking kids. Dmitry Kotsyubailo joked that Praviy Sektor fighters feed the pet wolf with"bones of Russian-speaking children". Once more, some really macabre 'humor'. Source: Focus.ua  . Kotsyubailo just happens to be a unit commander of the Right Sector, (Pravy or Praviy Sektor), "First separate attack company". Here he is receiving the highest military honour from president Zelensky in 2021:

Here is an article of the unit commander:  Daily Mail + The Times (paywall) and here is a tweet screenshot of the unit:

Scene 4 back in 2014

A Ukrainian soldier points to writing on the artillery casing, "All the best to the children!"  Shells used regularly to bombard the civilian population in Donbass since 2014.

Scene 5

Speaking about shelling of civilians in Donbass, this is what Poroshenko had to say when he was president of Ukraine:

President Poroshenko stated in 2015: "Our children will go to schools and kindergartens! And their children will be sitting in basements! And this is the only way we will win the war".

Scene 6

Canned meat produced and distributed by the Ukrainian Alexand Gramanchuk, an ATO veteran from Vinnitsa.  The labels are coloured red and black, exactly the same colours as Right Sector. with fascist symbols such as the coat of arms of the and the colours of the OUN-UPA, the sam colours taken up by Right Sector, (Praviy Sektor). The writing on the label it states: "Separatist in oil", "Separatist in sour cream"and also refers to Russian-speaking baby on the label.

Also pay attention to the air assault para forces flag in the background,  which is linked to notorious Aidar unit, the 24th Air Assault battalion.

Once more a grisly glimpse into the vile hatred of Russian speaker as well as alluding to dead children in Donbas.

PART 3 - The media angle

The context that was previously accessible in the corporate Western MSM, but now missing:

Only Al Jazeera seems to be able to tackle the issue head on of late:

Azov National Guard tweet

Just before the Russian military operation (intervention in NATO/US-speak or MSM speak - invasion), Buzzfeed managed this publish this:

Although Azov gets the limelight and full attention,  it is somewhere handy for the MSM that is the case, as a multitude of other other-nationalist units and units infested with Bandera ideology are all conveniently under the radar, thereby minimising the whole issue of Ukrainian nationalist extremism.

I need to emphasise that absolutely no action has been taken by Ukrainian governments against the likes of 'Azov' or 'Aidar'.

The video clip is from a BBC documentary detailing the activities of the National Militia, (now the National Corps), the political wing of 'Azov', their attacks, threats, clashes and connections to officials.  Once Ukrainians were able to explain what was going on in their country as was the case of a BBC Newsnight documentary in 2017.

Fast-foward to 2018, once more the "National Corps", (Azov connected paramilitary unit) disrupting, threatening official proceedings, this time in a law court.  A scene that has been repeated a hundred times throughout Ukraine, acts of threats and violence against the judiciary by ultra-nationalists. In particular, legal proceedings against those who committed crimes during the ATO, were severely disrupted  or halted due to these actions.

Yet, time after time, we're being told that there is only a handful of Neo-nazis. How come just a handful of extremists have such influence in the whole country?

Here's an article from back in 2015 about an Aidar volunteer that featured in the ELLE magazine.

Nowadays, we are being told about this side only: (notice the green insignia above the elbow- Aidar).

NOTES

Transcript of Ukrainian journalist:

““Especially at a time like this, since in Russia they call us Nazis, fascists and so on. I’ll allow myself to quote Adolf Eichmann, who said that in order to destroy a nation you must first of all destroy its children. Because by killing their parents the children will grow up and take revenge. By killing children they will never grow up and the nation will disappear. The Ukrainian Armed Forces cannot destroy Russian children because it is forbidden by the rules of war and it is also forbidden by various conventions including the Geneva Conventions.

“But I am not from the Armed Forces of Ukraine. And when I get the chance to settle things with the Russians I will be obliged to do it. Since you call me a Nazi, I’ll adhere to the doctrine of Adolf Eichmann and will do everything in my power to ensure that your children never live on this earth. So that you can feel what it’s like when innocent civilians die. So that you can feel all the pain and suffering when you say, ‘We didn’t start the war. It was all Putin. We didn’t want this war.’ We didn’t want it either.

“But you have to understand it’s about the victory of the Ukrainian people. It’s not about peace. We need victory. And if we have to slaughter all your families to do it, I’ll be the first to do it. Glory to the nation! And let’s hope there will [not] be such a nation as Russia and the Russians on this earth again. Because they are just scum that pollute this land. If Ukrainians have the opportunity, which they are basically doing right now, to destroy, to slaughter, to kill, to strangle the Muscovites, I hope everyone will do their part and whack at least one Muscovite.” [Channel 24 anchor, Fahruddin Sharafmal]
