I saw it Monday night with
slashmommy. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Here are some of my thoughts. Realize that I was so unspoiled, I didn't know
Nimoy was in the film or that there was a Spock/Uhura kiss.
- Spock Prime punched the time stream and created an alternate universe. Hee. (If you don't get this, it's a comics reference.)
- A song by the Beastie Boys should not be in a Star Trek movie. It just shouldn't. That said, it does the job of pointing out that this is something different.
- "I assume you've prepared new insults." I love it! Don't talk about Spock's momma. You won't like it, if you do.
- Kirk is a jerk and I wouldn't put him in charge of a cycle, much less a starship. I'm just sayin'.
- Actually seeing the moment when Spock made his choice to go to Starfleet. Aww, Spock, it was a perfectly logical choice. Perfectly. Logical. And had nothing to do with slighting his momma indirectly.
- McCoy is very, very McCoy. I wish there'd been more for him to do.
- That's right, call Kirk on cheating. I'm sorry but lauding him for that is wrong, wrong, wrong! But, I can see an older Spock speaking of it in an amused and admiring tone as his first taste of Kirk.
- Uhura rocks. She gets Spock to back down. Here are the smarts and strength of character that I always knew she had.
- Let's take a moment and consider the lack of discipline on the bridge. People barging in, fights breaking out and bridge staff departing with nary a word to anyone, leaving their stations unstaffed! I fear for Starfleet and the Federation.
- Let's take a moment and consider the wonder of Spock/Uhura! I … just. Yeah. I was shocked but delighted as all hell when Spock wrapped himself around Uhura and accepted comfort from her. And even better, when Spock gave her an extremely Spock-like duty-bound statement of what he needed, she accepted it. None of that emote for me, dammit, stuff from our girl. [I will tell haters to go watch the Spock & Uhura show from ST:TOS "Charlie X". Those two have always had an understanding.]
- Damn, Spock is hard core. Tossing someone off a ship is extreme.
- And Kirk is almost too stupid to live.
- Huh. Spock Prime is here and I … don't care. I mean, I am so into this movie and this crew, that I didn't need him to make the experience for me. That said, it's always good to see Nimoy.
- Um. Surely if one were standing on a planet with that good a view of a developing black hole, one is truly fucked. Yes? Am I thinking too much?
- Scotty is damn amusing (maybe a bit too much), but I really thought Galaxy Quest would have ended the random twirling slicing blades as a threat in sf movies for all time. Clearly not.
- I want a Kirk & Uhura song vid to EnVogue's "Never Gonna Get It," culminating in the Spock/Uhura smooch from the teleport pad.
I'm jumping ahead now, because the setup is done and now it's just down to cowboy diplomacy.
- Can we not have one science fiction movie with wall-to-wall floor?!
- You give a captaincy to someone fresh out of the academy? Okay, he managed to save the Earth, but I'd prefer a little experience to temper that Pike-lauded natural aptitude.
Like I said, I enjoyed it and I appreciated the AU-ness. The re-boot is a whole new universe where the characters have the same personalities but have been honed by other experiences. Cool.
Part of me thinks Spock Prime has an inferiority complex to humans and can't imagine himself as captain of a ship of them. I realize he truly believed Kirk's brashness was needed to stop Nemo, but he also may have delayed Spock's career path, by insisting Kirk take over and later by suggesting Spock make friends with Kirk.
And again, I realize that Spock Prime is giving advice that he would have wanted, but the thing is that Spock isn't Spock Prime. If Spock hooked up with Uhura, maybe he'd like to be a captain too. Does Spock Prime have the right to try to get for Spock what he had just because he enjoyed it? Really, I think Spock Prime should, er, stop talking to the kids.
Anyway, it's bedtime. Maybe I'll have more thoughts tomorrow.
