But the thing is that I do usually get pre-mixed, so my mom was all "No, you can't get more until you use up all that powder and syrup we still have"

You said how sometimes you find a bit of chocolate at the bottom and it spoils the taste cause you got all that suddenly coming right at you. Especially the case for syrup. But there's a way to avoid that!
What I do is get a clear glass cup if I'm using syrup. Y'know what you need to use in the process? Chopsticks. Or some other stick. Maybe even the handle of the spoon! Start off with the spoon to get most of it mixed. Get the stick and start stirring/rubbing against the bottom for the leftover stuff stuck there. Make sure to raise the glass so you can see the bottom of the cup while you're doing it! That way you can make sure all the syrup has been dissolved into the milk. Course, if you're a slow drinker, make sure you re-stir if any comes back to the bottom.
When it comes to pouring, I kinda just count to 3 or 5 when it goes down. It always looks like it's the right amount of chocolate in the end for me.
Hope that helps!

I prefer not to use the powder, since if you need to add more, it doesn't seem to mix as well.
I hope that helps?
