Backstory: I was at the Goodwill the other day, looking for new-to-me insulated/thermal drapes. There is one crappy, unopenable window left in the house. And not only is it pained shut, it's also not insulated for crap. The whole area around it is noticeably hotter in the summer than anywhere else. So I was looking for a cheap set of curtains to help with the situation. It's too old and nasty to waste the ridiculously expensive thermal film on it. And I'm not wasting money on drapes for a window that will hopefully be replaced without 18 months. I visited three different Goodwill stores, and didn't find what I needed. (I did score some for my dinning room though for only $16, 4 panels of lined JCPenney 84" drapes with valances and tiebacks - like $250 worth of goodness!)
Today: I also found a copy of "the Sims 3" for less than $10 which I was finally able to install. I know... it just came out! What a find! So I installed and updated and patched... yada, yada, yada. Then I realized that I'd lost 6.5 hours of my life in a time dilation field around my computer! I swear, one moment I'm trying to build a Sim with a passing resemblance to John Sheppard (SGA), and the next thing I know, it's past dinner time! Yikes! All I managed to do was create one family (4 adults) and build the basics of their home. I haven't even got to the good stuff yet!
The Sims 3: I love the improved graphic quality, but it has the same boring objects, floors, walls, and such from earlier editions. I really expected more in that department, but this isn't the deluxe edition so maybe the goodies are there instead. The customization of the faces, hair, wardrobe, and skills/traits is vastly improved. The changes to the face structure customization alone is worth the [retail] price. However, I'm not sure I like the fact that they got rid of our ability to make custom facial skins and create our favorite fandom icons. I accidentally stumbled on a combination that looked like one character while trying to create a different one. Frustrating, but I'm sure someone with a better eye for detail and more skill wouldn't be having such a hard time with it. Overall, I like it a lot. I just need to get some custom objects to spice it up to my standards.
