On Running: Winter Comes

Nov 18, 2011 01:28

Last couple runs have been fun.  I ran the Haunted Graveyard 5K at Oakwood Cemetery dressed as a zombie and somehow managed to get a new PR (22:29) despite all the hills as well as winning second place in my division and first place in the scariest costume contest (won a hat and glass).  A couple weeks later, I joggled the Lincoln Elementary school 5K.  I had never joggled a road race before (the race director put me up to it), but it was fun and I got lots of cool comments.

Now, I have a dillemma; winter is coming.  It is difficult to run out in the snow at a high level.  Also I have always had trouble breathing in winter weather as the cold air really hurts my lungs.  It's depressing as I don't have much to train for right now or much means to do it.  Then again, I am also getting tired...tired of getting up at 5:30AM some days to run, tired of coughing and having chest pain from the cold, tired of being sore all the time....I think I might take a little time off, even if it's just a couple weeks.  I'm not sure I'll fully be able to give it up for the season though.  Part of me wants to experiment and see if I can get my body to adapt to running in the winter climate.  In any event, I am going to cut down on my distance.  I probably won't be hitting double digits again until next year due to the weather, but am going to try to stay active in some capacity.

I might do one or two more races before the end of the year, but we'll see.  Next year, however, I want to take it to a whole new level.  I am already plotting my races for 2012.  By then, I want to transition from Endurance Athlete Lite to Full Blown Endurance Athlete.  PAIN!
