Tags and communities

LJ question:

Is it right that when I create a new tag for a comm, I as a maintainer have to use it at least one time before members of the comm can use it?
That's what it seems like to me at the moment. Is there any way around that? If you're a comm maintainer, how do you do this?

saying: ???, site: lj

I don't maintain a com, but this is what I would try:

Create one post named "community tags" and then list all the tags in that post, as well as *use* all the tags on that post. That way, you will have used the tag without the need to create a new post every time.

Does this make sense?

usually, yes.

you can set it up differently, i think there's an option for anyone to make a tag-check the main page or the customize or the edit tags page.

Go to "home"
then to "journal" - make sure to switch to the right community
go to "manage tags"
change the options at "tag settings"

That's it! :D

It depends on how you have your community set up. As the maintainer, you have the option of either allowing members to create new tags or leaving it so only the maintainers can create tags. As leochi said, go to home > manage tags. You'll have to switch users at the top of the page and work as the community you're editing.

If you don't want to give members the option of adding new tags, for whatever reason (depending on the comm, it might not be for the best if you need to keep things organized), then you can add tags in the same screen. You can also edit pre-existing tags, delete them, etc. You don't have to use them first.
