My own highlights of Convergence 13
I can't be bothered to actually try to make a narrative of this stuff. Deal...
- Friday afternoon: As we were wandering down toward the vending area in the early afternoon, I was enchanted to find
Zoe Keating playing the last 10 minutes of her set. Good Lord, she's amazing. I was really bummed that we missed the bulk of her set but was happily surprised to see
Paul Mercer mount the stage and propose a improv duet with her.
OMG!
The two of them proceeded to make musical joy right there in front of us. I can't speak highly enough of Paul's talents on the violin and to see them blended with the Zoe's cello was a rare treat. I spoke with Zoe the next week after her Seattle show and she said that she and Paul had a recording session scheduled to capture some of their improvs to tape. I can't wait to hear what they get down.
- Friday night: Dancing to Skinny Puppy! w00t! This was my first time seeing them live and what can I say? They were freakin' loud. Painfully loud, actually. The stage antics were cool and besplattered with much fake blood. Joy!
- Saturday night: I'm sad that I missed the Submarine Fleet set. I was looking forward to catching their show but, alas, as we were on next, I was a bit busy with the myriad preparations. That's always the bummer about sharing a stage with bands you like: usually, you're so busy with your own deal that you miss their show.
As an aside, I get to see
The Last Dance tomorrow night and, for once, we're not sharing the stage with them so I get to play the rabid fanboy! w00t!
Many thanks and kudos to Libby (
carpe_jugulum) for the exquisite set of falls she made for me. I swear I got more positive comments for those than I ever did for the show itself! It seemed like I couldn't take three steps through the crowd without someone stopping me and asking where I got them. Thankfully, Libby was usually around so I could simply point and say, "She made them!" :)
Once we mounted the stage, it seemed like everything was working in our favor. Unlike a few of our past shows (Mecha Fest and Dragoncon...) we didn't suffer through any technical difficulties. Rather, we started right up and blazed through the set with wild abandon. It was an amazing experience. It all seemed to just flow from song to song without even the slightest bit of trouble. My new violin performed flawlessly and it sounded (to my ears, at least) absolutely wonderful. No more electric violin shenanigans for me...
After the set, we cleared the stage and reported to the merch table where we spent the next couple of hours chatting with the audience. Merch was sold, CDs were autographed, and many new friends were made.
Alas, I missed Front Line Assembly's set. Here's me crying bitter tears of disappointment. Ah, well.
- Sunday morning: I, Paul Mercer,
magpie_ratt, and Jason (who's on LJ somewhere, I hear) performed an impromptu jam around Magpie's songs. Molly (
dreadful_red) graced us with some of her fancy bellydance moves while we serenaded the passersby. Much fun was had by all.
There is more, I'm certain. I'll post more as it occurs to me.
